Teacher Rec?

My DS Calculus teacher who also was his 11th grade math teacher, has a policy of only witting letters of rec (or in this case the online rec) once the year is several month in. He said in his experience he has done them earlier only to see student slack off and get senoritas. Although he said he doesn't think that would be the case with my ds, he is sticking to his policy and wont write one until late fall. In addition he is a hardass teacher who doesn't believe anyone deserves 10's on a 1-10 scale. I am confident he will give him a good rec but may not be over the top like most because just not his nature. Would say my DS would probably be his highest recommendation but he is just not the type to be over the top and is kind of cold. Could this affect his chances? How much are these rec weighted? His other rec is outstanding- even has a fantastic letter from a close family friend who is a 2 star AF General.

My question is... could my DS get a LOA without 1 teacher rec? He has EVERYTHING else completed and has been busting his tush to do that all summer to at least be considered early only to have this hold up which is out of his control. FRUSTRATING!!! I know appointment is the goal but curious if he would be considered at all for a LOA with 1 rec missing?

Also posted this earlier with no response so throwing it out there again..Wondering if there is a confirmed date for when the first admissions board meets? I have read Aug 26, Sept 1...?? Any BGO's out there in with inside scoop? Also wondering the status on CVW this fall? Will they still be offering this program and are there dates scheduled?

Your goal should be an appointment, not a LOA

neugs- did you miss this... I am aware of the goal as stated in my op. That was not the question.

crair70,

I really wouldn't worry about exactly when the first Admission's Board convenes -- you might have the entire application completed by that point, but due to sheer numbers, your DS's isn't presented until a later Thursday.

I would echo neugs, it seems like you are focused on an LOA...no guarantees that even a "perfect" application would get you one these days (see USNA1985's comments about LOAs).

Most importantly, I would recommend that your son (not you) engage your BGO and explain the situation and request guidance or help (provide the BGO with the teacher's phone number). At some point you and your son can only do so much and need to raise the issue up via appropriate means. I believe this is the case and if I was your son's BGO, I would be more than happy to place a phone call and explain the significance on a timely application.
Also, it is okay for the teacher to grade very hard -- that is understandable. What I recommend asking is that your teacher comment on your son in relation to other students (i.e. Joe is my number one student) and/or write a brief sentence on why he/she doesn't give out many "10's."

great advise Jadler03. He has his BGO interview Saturday- he will discuss that with him and ask for his assistance. Worth a shot... Thanks!

Crair my DS was in the same boat. It took 60 days for his math teacher to finally get his in. So he was finally able to complete his file last week. Now just lots of waiting, hoping and talking to the mailman. Good luck.

I agree re not focusing on an LOA. If you have everything else in -- and I do mean everything except medical -- contact your RD and let him/her know of the situation and when the teacher will write reps. However, doing so while anything else is outstanding is wasted time.

math only?

does the teacher rec have to come from the math teacher?
