What kind of recommendation are the teachers asked to provide? Is it a questionnaire that can be done rather quickly or is it a full-blown recommendation letter? It would be helpful to give each teacher a heads up regarding how much time may be required to complete it since there are so many students asking for recommendations this time of year.

It mostly is a questionnaire, though there is a limited free-response space that your teacher will be required to fill out.
I would estimate it wouldn't take more than an hour (total) if the teacher is taking their time and being thoughtful (most of the time would be spent on the free response question). Your teacher has the ability to open the link, look at the free-response question and type it in a word processing application (in the event that they want to work on it and then edit/re-read at a later time). Once your teacher has completed the response in the word processor, he/she can copy it into the webpage and then fill out the other questions (this should take all of 5-10 minutes). Again, most of the time would be spent on the free-response write up.

If I can add.... If you are able to get these done before the school year ends, I highly recommend that. My DS (Plebe) had to round these up over the Summer prior to his Senior year. Not all of the teachers checked their school/work email regularly which made it a challenge for him. Not to mention it's their Summer vacation too. Best of luck to you in your endeavors.

DS is a Senior right now. He made the decision to apply later than most and it has become extremely important to him. He fears that he is way behind since USNA is on rolling admissions. Time is of utmost importance right now.

Usually kids applying to the SAs are well liked by their teachers. I would think some polite reminders (every week) how important their recommendations are to his appointment would be well received by them.

While getting things done early is always commendable and can help in a small way, your son is right on track for getting his Academy stuff together. The deadline is Jan 31st and it is just the end of Sept now. The majority of candidates are right where he is at the moment. The crucial deadlines at this moment are his congressional nominations applications.
