I've gotten conflicting info about tennis shoes for Plebe summer. Can, or should, Plebes bring "broken in" tennis shoes from home. If yes, do they need to have the exact style and brand they'll be issued? What brand and style are they issued? DS has a hard time working in shoes and he'd like not to have to worry about shoe problems along with the normal challenges of Plebe summer.

You can and definitely should bring in broken in running shoes. They can be pretty much anything that's relatively conservative in appearance, i.e. predominately white or gray. Color accents or whatever are fine.

Plebes are issued dorky looking, but actually pretty good, New Balance running shoes. Most people just use what they bring from home.

My Mid used something like THIS without issues.

However, something like THIS might not be so good.

I visited a running shoe specialist in my area (Asheville, NC) who highly recommended the New Balance 993 for running. (The specialist also recommended a flashy blue/yellow/red shoe, which I had to politely decline.)

The 993s are a bit pricy at $140, but I have never felt better after running. The color is almost entirely light gray, too, so appearance shouldn't be an issue.

Just be sure you have well broken in running shoes. Sons and daughters should be, by IDay, very well conditioned runners. Don't worry at all about the color...this is 2012 and no one cares about sneaker colors...there are bigger issues that detailers will be working on.

A high price can be worth it at times. I purchased a pair of Asic gel- landreth 7 at 115 dollars at a Fleet Feet Store in Raleigh, NC. It was much better than all the running shoes I have ever owned. Most Asic models do have a white/grey of white/blue model.

Personally I frown away from Nikes because they appear popular due to the hype- I own a total of 5 Nikes. Asics, New Balance, Brooks, Saucony, and some Adidas are simply better designed better for running than for show.

I think there is a guide for running shoes and acceptable colors. It isn't Red White and Blue. I think it is muted. Those broken in over the summer are best. You will be issued new ones on I Day. Use the old ones and break in the issue as you can during the day.

As long as the colors aren't practically fluorescent, you'll be fine. You just don't want anything that calls attention to yourself. It's far more important to have shoes that fit well, and are broken in. Many of you will do more running this summer than ever before. If you don't already have good running shoes, now's the time to get them.
