*from priors at naps before the directs have arrived*

Between musters several enlisted nukes and I have come up with questions nobody seems to have the answers to.
    1) would a nuke that enlisted in (say) October 2014 wear the good conduct medal when he goes to USNA? What enlisted time "counts"?

    2) Our contract states that upon graduating Nuclear Power School we receive 3k of our 10k signing bonus. Several accepted their offers to NAPS shortly before or after graduating Power school. There doesn't seem to be a correlation between who got paid, and that is a sizable sum to a young man. Understandably, we'd like to "keep what we earned" if at all possible. Who would we go to to straighten this out?

Thanks in advance for any help! We appreciate anything from those older and wiser sailors.

With regard to (1): Enlisted members wear whatever ribbons/medals, both personal and unit, they have already earned if they become midshipmen. I have seen priors with some impressive chest candy. At graduation and commissioning, enlisted time counts for pay purposes. Some may get paid as 0-1 over 2 (or possibly 4), rather than 0-1 with less than two.

As for (2), I would think the chain of command is familiar with this, or there is a former Napster who can comment.

All your enlisted time counts. At NAPS you maintain your enlisted rank (if I remember correctly) and you will accrue enlisted time there to help count towards what Capt MJ mentioned in terms of pay and towards things like the good cookie.

Not sure on 2. Every year they have sailors come in from the Nuke pipeline. An admin chief at NAPS should be able to straighten this out with no problem.

DD had as prior Marine as a roommate who had a lot of fruit salad. DD said that standing at attention in dress in her Company and 2lt asked one of the others Plebes (not roommate) what is that ribbon for ? Answer, Purple Heart Mam. I think you could have heard a pin drop.

    ET3,

Just so you know your time at USNA counts to time in service for pay purposes, IE over 2, 4, 6, etc, but not towards retirement.

Not toward military retirement, but is factored in to federal retirement.

O-1 pay grade starts at graduation not when you entered academy and the four years is not factored into your pay grade (unless prior service as enlisted I don't know that one O-1 +2 E?) . But as LITS said it can be factored into federal retirement not military.

    4 years or more enlisted time prior to commissioning = O-1E, O-2E, O-3E vice O-1, O-2, O-3 on paychart.

Time at NAPS does count, however.

The E ends at O-3E, after that, no more E pay

Any enlisted medals and ribbons worn must be reflected in your official personnel folder.

I was a non-nuke EMFN with just under 4 years enlisted time when I left NAPS. I did not rate a Good Conduct Medal since I did not have 4 years enlisted service, even though my contract was terminated on I-Day -1.

Not sure about bonuses. Back in 1990, I had my Montgomery GI Bill contribution refunded (minus taxes).

I imagine that's why we reported a day early (I-Day -1) so that USNA personnel could square away our enlisted records.

As I was graduating, USNA started assigning CPOs and SNCOs at the company level. As I was taught, they are the real problem solvers...once you get settled in after Plebe Summer, I recommend reaching out to them if need be.

Chiefs and Gunnys make the world go 'round!
