Texas Nominations for 2014

Someone HAD to have given him a nomination, otherwise he wouldn't be able to receive an appointment.

AF - I totally agree with you in theory, but so far my son knows THREE people this year (from the boards or SLS) who received LOA's to WP, but didn't apply for noms for it (and some of them know for sure they didn't receive a nom from any of their MOC's), yet all three received appointments in the last few weeks anyway, much to their surprise (all 3 are planning on different academies). Beginning to wonder myself where they're pulling these extra noms from!

Could be a Superintendent's nom.

Our MOC's military liaison told us they (MOC's) horse trade back and forth with each other; he also said there are ways around the maximum number they have in the academy.

What exactly is a Superintendent's nom besides the obvious that it is given by the Superintendent. Is there an unlimited number that can be given? Are there parameters around it? Are they given to those who the SA wants but there was no nom for that candidate? I've always heard of them but never heard of an exact definition. In my materials concerning nominations, there is no mention of a Superintendent's nom.

Usually there are 3 numbers.
Are you from the 6th Congressional District? If so, sounds like a Rep. nom.

- TX062 would be a Representative nom for the 6th Congressional District for slot 2 (of the 5 that that Rep. has at that Academy).

- Senator #2 nom would say 621,622,623,624 or 625 for slot 1,2,3,4 or 5 (of the 5 that that Senator has at that Academy).

- Likewise Senator #1 would say 611,612,613,614, or 615 for slot 1,2,3,4,or 5.

TX062 is not the 6th district 2 slot. If that were true My profile would be really messed up. MY two Noms are NM01 and NM61. Going by your logic, for the first nom i live in the 0th district in new mexico and am the #1 for it. and as for the second i would live in the 6th district ( NM only has 2 districts) and also be #1 on that non existent slate lol:shake:

NM01 means district 1. NM61 means senator nom (first digit of 6 always means the senator), assigned to the first senator. If the third number is shown (as it is on my MALO database, but not usually to candidates), my understanding was that it referred to the SLOT available, not a ranking within the year. For example, Congressman X can have 5 candidates at USMA - #'s 1-5. This year the only slot open is number 3, so anyone he assigns a nom to would show as NM013 (for example).

would a malo be allowed to disclose the other numbers to the candidate or are they supposed to keep it secret? lol sorry to sound kiddish

The other number doesn't tell you anything other than what number slot the MOC is filling. It doesn't "mean" anything. Just a way of keeping track of the candidates assigned to him. So if I look in a certain district this year, anyone who received a slot in NM01 (as I said above, assuming his third slot was available) would show as NM013 on the MALO database. All 10 of them. Meanwhile, the candidates (well, now cadets) who actually received the appointments assigned to that MALO over the last 3 years would technically be NM011, 012, 014, and 015, but they'd all be at the academy already.

marciemi and I were saying the same thing, she just explained it a lot better than I did

Sorry to cause confusion by throwing that 3rd number in there. I didn't realize that that was only shown on the MALO database. Thanks for clearing that up :thumb:

rockycollins - if we drop the confusing 3rd number, TX62 means you got a Senatorial nom from Senator #2. Like marciemi said- that 6 means it is from a Senator.

marciemi - I haven't forgotten that I owe you an email !

Buff81 - I'm sorry, I totally missed your reply up there otherwise I would have tried to build off of it, not explain all over again. I think I clicked the "go to first new post" arrow which took me to the post after yours, even though I hadn't read all the rest of the thread.

Do you know yet if you're heading out to WP in April? My husband just got the schedule and who to contact to arrange travel info, but that all came from our RC, who I know is different from yours.

No problem on the email - seems like I always owe a bunch!

No problem! It needed to be explained again since I was a big 'fail' in my attempt.

I haven't heard anything about the WP trip. I need to ask about it. I would love to go. Especially if they have a session on, 'The Art of Explaining.'

Understanding the Appointment Process?

We like the previous gentleman are wondering as to the status of our situation, ours is slightly different in that we have received a "congressional nomination, as a competitive alternate" from Representative Ron Paul to the US Naval Academy. We have completed all necessary application, medical, and physical testing. Our BGO (Naval Academy) has interviewed my son and now we are not sure what the process is for receiving an appointment to the Naval Academy.

My son's details are below:
GPA: 3.77
Rank: 266 out of about 711
SAT: CR- 590, Math- 600, Writing- 540
ACT: Takes next week

1 of 56 students with Straight A's
Academic All District
Captain on the football team (4 years)
Captain on the Lacrosse Team (3 years)
Very involved with church and other volunteer groups.

So I guess my big question is, since he was listed as "competitive alternate" does that mean that the congressman actually appointed 1 and we are an alternate if there are any remaining slots? My understanding is that each representative may only have 5 in each of the academies at any time.

Any information is greatly appreciated on the "Appointment" process is greatly appreciated.
