Thankgiving Help ?

... Perhaps USMMA cadets can learn to pack light and learn to navigate the public transportation so they can take advantage of the lower prices at the NYC airports.
Major airlines have email alerts whenever there is a fare sale...easy to sign up for these so you'll know.

I can't help but get a chuckle from this a West Point parent suggesting that Kings Pointers might learn better ideas about travel, transportation and "packing light."

The first irony is probably lost on most if you've never seen the load out of any of the ships the DS/DD of KP Parents routinely sail on during Sea year on an MSC ship - trust me, the Army could learn a thing or two about packing light. Sure an Infantryman generally carries everything he/she needs in ~70# but trust me the logistics tail our DS/DD bring behind for them based on the TPFDD they (the Army) generates is anything but light.:shake:

The second irony is that by the time a KP Parent's DS/DD enters first class year they've generally been around the world and traveled to several countries, working and traveling pretty light, all on their own or with one other midshipmen. While their counterparts do much of their training and travel with considerably more supervision and oversight, as well as generally in larger groups.

 I had a long, exasperating day at work today ending it with the difficulty of having to go to personnel to get a new ID card. But I busted out laughing when I moved from TPG's post about the newly created acronyms list and Jasperdog throws out TPFDD on the very next post. I'm sure a lot of folks are scratching their heads over that one. Personally, I'm laughing because that is all I spent doing today; working on multiple operations coming up in the next few months. To let all of you off the hook (TPFDD = Time Phased Force & Deployment Data). Basically the timeline we use to move people, equipment, supplies, etc. so everybody & everything arrives when it is needed.

Ironically, Newark (the farthest airport from USMMA) is really the easiest airport to access via public transportation from USMMA. LIRR to Penn Station, NJ Transit to Newark. Kennedy and LGA really aren't easily accessible via public transportation from USMMA. IMHO, LGA isn't accessible via public transportation from anywhere.

I agree that LGA is not accessible by public transportation. But our DD very quickly figured out how to get to JFK via public transport after paying for taxis once. In the end, she discovered that since she is mostly likely to be departing on a Friday afternoon, public transport was actually faster than a taxi. :thumb:

Jasperdog, I just meant come home w/ a backpack as opposed to a suitcase. Did not mean to imply you sea-going types couldn't pack light. Sometimes young cadets/mids are wrestling with large bags that make public transportation difficult. Last year our parent list serve had cases of cadets flying in, planes late, buses missed, and no idea how to use public transportation. Cadets didn't want to attempt taxis and trains alone with two large suitcases. It was a mess!
As far as navigation to airports, LGA is easiest in my cadets opinion, when using public transportation. At West Point, we are very lucky to have access to the GMK buses that take our cadets to four airports. From time to time, though, they have to wing it on their own, and somehow manage to figure it out without any hand-holding from home. They are pretty adventurous!

But Maximus, everyone wants to go see Mickey, so you will always get gouged...some places don't get a break. :frown:

I've bought that flight many times before for $99! My MIL once booked a Jet Blue there for $69!!!!
Price gouging!

Kings Point?

Is that a Lobster House?

J/K

You can get to LGA on a city bus from the Bus terminal at the Roosevelt Avenue Station on the Flushing Line (Number 7) subway.

LIRR to the Flushing-Main Street station.
Change to the Number 7.
Get off at Roosevelt Avenue.
Go downstairs to catch the bus. The Q 33 goes to the Main Terminal.

Cheaper flights

My DS often travels to Orlando to come home to Florida, I have found that booking his flights one way has saved LOTS of money. Not to sure why, but my wallet is happier!
Have a Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

LGA to Jacksonville for Thanksgiving was $275.00 on Delta. We purchased the ticket on parents weekend. It is a direct flight.

LGA to ATL for Christmas was $380.00 on Delta. We purchased the ticket 11/20/09.

All tickets were purchased at delta .com

Our DS uses Friendly Taxi to get to LGA.

Lately, Airtran has been much cheaper than Delta out of LGA. Still, prices are significantly higher than last year at this time. But who can put a price on having the kiddies home for the holidays? Cha-ching.
