"On this day fifty-six years ago in 1968, U.S. Marines at the Khe Sanh Combat Base in Vietnam were fighting in one of the most intense battles of the Vietnam War.

The Battle of Khe Sanh pitted 6,000 encircled and besieged Marines against 20,000 North Vietnamese Army troops. "

One of my recruiters in 1981 was at Khe Sahn at the age of 19. He said it was only time in Vietnam he was regularly cold. He didn't mind the constant shelling but had nightmares for years about the rats that infested the mountaintop base. He had nothing but praise for the Air Force B-52s which would bomb the NVA so close to their lines but not hit the Marine positions.
