Hi all this is my first post so go easy on me :roll eyes: my DS, is, as my title states on hold. Now wondering if it is possible to know if the offers extended for this year's expected class of 2018- morph a hold candidates status into "alternates" (status)? Meaning "Holds" are actually only waiting for candidates offered initial spots to reject the offer? Or is that not how it works?

In May, I would say yes. But this early, no. A ton of people are still on hold. Things are still shaking out. Some of the Holds will get rejected. I'm no expert but going by my own experience last year. What state? That could make a big difference.

PeaceB,
Great verse...

Here is how "Hold" plays out as I understand it:

1) A "Principal" declines their appointment to the USMMA, it opens a slot for a "Hold".

2) A "Conditional" who has a LOA and can not meet one or more of the specified criteria (i.e. Medically Qualified, Nomination, the CFA, 7th Semester Grades, etc...) opens a slot for a "Hold".

3) A "Principal" who accepts the Appointment has something very bad goes wrong (gets hurt, gets into trouble, etc....) and does not make it to Indoc.

What I do not know: If "Hold" means that a candidate is full 3Q (i.e. DoDMERB cleared, Nomination in hand and USMMA approved for CFA and Academics).

As Mman said, I believe state definitely plays a role this early in the process (but not so much as I Day approaches) since the USMMA has a very unique charter as it relates to filling chairs by state.

Hope this helps.

Thank you all so much, ur responses clarify much. And yes, bearhunter66 he is 3Q (congrats BTW on ur appointment-right?) a TWE - gotta' luv the acronyms- a TWE from CAPT Johnson says DS is 3Q specifically DoDMERB cleared, Nomination from FL Senator in hand and USMMA approved for CFA and Academics. A little background; when DS first discovered usmma he was drawn to the KP location - he is born and was raised in NY up until middle school- so he decided to take a day visit - didn't even need a GPS from the airport as we are so familiar with the area! So, DS said; "from the minute I walked on the KP campus, I knew it was my destiny". BTW we also have to pry him off the water here in sw FL, as he's got salt water running through his veins - and his dad's a viking sea captain from sweden.

Now we as parents have been optimistic toward the goal (in our house "Primary") however DS takes a more "defensive pessimistic" stance. Since his math is strongish (650) it could be his low average CR - 550 and GPA weighted 3.5 that might be stalling things. and although ….yatta, yatta, yatta, i apologize if I'm boring you with his life story lol at any rate he is from FL ;-) thanks again - all u all for ur posts.

PeaceB,
Yes, DS has accepted an appointment.

No one knows the recipe for an offer although I think we all know the ingredients (academics, athletics, leadership, service, fitness, etc...) . Every candidate is different and each has strengths relative to one another.

The following link may be useful (pages 5 and 6). Seats for individual USMMA applicants from states are appointed to the academy in proportion to the state’s representation in Congress, at least in the initial stages of building the class.

In terms of the USMMA national wait list and "hold status", google "Domine v. Kumar, 2012".

"Academy has stated that, in filling vacancies after candidates from various jurisdictions decline appointments, it has a policy of transitioning on April 1 from an alternate list by jurisdiction (in order of merit) to a national alternate list (in order of merit) for the purpose of ensuring that it can fill open slots by the nationally recognized college acceptance deadline of May 1."

"On or about April 1, the USMAA extends an appointments [sic] to the number of alternates on the national alternates list, in the order of merit in accordance with the statutory command of 46 U.S.C. § 51302(d)(3), required to meet its projected yield. "

Best wishes to you and your DS.

Beaz,
Not sure how sports recruitment works, but "Domine v. Kumar, 2012" does provide a lot of insight about "Holds".

Example:
- How the USMMA fills the class pre/post April 1
- Local jurisdiction "Holds"
- The national list of "Holds"
- Role of merit (i.e. ranking)

Also of interest is how the USMMA offers Principal appointments by local jurisdiction factoring in "expected yield".

Wow That is some good intel bearhunter, I didn't know there was a lawsuit. It sheds a lot of light but leaves a bit of mystery still.

That young man persevered and is class of '17 now.

I seem to recall a bunch of the holds getting the nod in the last ten days or so of March but they keep trickling in right through May.

Congrats to your son on the appointment bearhunter and best of luck to you Beaz and peacebstill. Despite (andto a great degree because of) the restrictions on plebes my son has made some great friends and is really enjoying the adventure so far.

You want to go to sea? Prep at CAL or SUNY. There were a few from my class who "preped" there and it worked out well for them. If you don't get accepted to KP the next year atleast you've already made some headway towards your lisence.

If you're trying to go active duty... Well that's another ball of wax entirely.

The class of 2018 that is reporting in July has 250 in it. I don't know if that included or excludes any setbacks, if there are any.
With the draw down in Afghanistan, there could be less need for active duty service members in the future, making going active duty after graduation questionable. Go to KP because you want to learn about the maritime industry, ships, engineering, maritime law, etc.

Are you saying all appointments for 2018 have been given out and now we are waiting for someone to decline?

The incoming graduating class of 2018 will have 250 in it. I am not saying all the appointments have been given out. Some people wait until the last minute to decline their appointment b/c their 1st choice appointment if finally given. Slots open b/c of that. And believe it or not, some people get hurt (or sick) before indoc, and can no longer attend the academy, opening up slots. I wouldn't bet on it, but it has happened. Once indoc starts, you'd have to wait till next year to come to KP.

DS's application status still remains "on file". If this is the case by April 1st, what does that mean? I assume a person that is on hold is on this national alternate list, correct me if I'm wrong, but if my DS's status still remains "of file" on April 1st then is this a bad thing? Will he not be able to be chosen from this national wait list?

Hold

Please correct me if I am wrong...if a state has say three appointments....will they continue to pull from that state till those slots have been filled?

We did a visit last week and the football coach explained it as the offers of appointments must be made IAW state quotas--but obviously not all offers would be accepted by the candidates. Once all the offers were made they were no longer held to a requirement to build the class demographics by state.

We didn't confirm this with the admissions office, but I have no reason to doubt the accuracy of the info.

Beaz:

I found the link and suggestion earlier in this thread provided by bearhunter66 quite informative on the subject

As I understand the information I found and read by googling "Domine v. Kumar, 2012" the answer to your question is either not necessarily and often no the way the implementing documents of the governing CFR and with good reasons tht have been tested and were upheld by the referenced case/lawsuit of Domine vs Kumar.

It seems like a bunch of appointments went out last week however my status still remains on file. Is this the case with anyone else still? Getting a little worried here..

Seeing that today is 1APRIL, I would believe that KP is now transitioning from the state HOLD list (ranked by merit within each state) to the national HOLD list (national merit based ranking).
