The dreaded "Hold" Status

Not waiting any longer...NAPS!

While everyone seems to be on the topic of their backup plans- what is everyone looking at for their plan Bs?

Plan B (goes into effect only in case of USMMA emergency or major act of teenage stupidity). I do not anticipate either but there is a motto somewhere called "Be Prepared"....

SUNY Maritime with NROTC (still waiting) or SSOP. I paid the deposit this weekend.

Are you still waiting to hear about NROTC scholarship??

Yep. Website still indicates "no decision has been made". Hard to believe...

Once he received and accepted appointment to KP it mattered much less to us but it does make us wonder what is going on.

It will be a full 8 months at the end of April (his complete ROTC app was submitted late Aug and made the 1st board).

Wow. I thought ours took a long time. DS, too, had app in for the first board. Portal updated to "not selected" early April. See you at KP!!

Status changed to NMMI

Our DS's status changed from HOLD to NMMI out of no where. No pre warning or call from admissions rep. Tried calling their office but got the voicemail to the direct line. Does this mean what we think it means? Or has the application been 'moved' into that pile?

This usually means that you will be receiving an offer to be a sponsored prep at NMMI. Usually you get a call offering the slot and then posted on your status page. After the verbal offer and acceptance a formal letter of the offer will follow along with paperwork.

If you are serious about KP, this is an outstanding opportunity to get in. Our DS took the NMMI offer this past year and will attending the USMMA class of 2018. It is an outstanding program to get the student up to par and in to KP.

It's official - NMMI spot

Thanks for the reply CaKPDad. Finally got through to admissions and it's an official prep school spot. We are in shock and thrilled. Basically was moving on to 'other' plans until this occured. Would like to PM you with my billion questions about the NMMI experience but it appears I don't have enough posts.

Good luck to all who are still ON HOLD - we stopped checking the portal for weeks and was pleasantly surprised.

Haze,

Just out of curiosity how did you receive a spot as a sponsored prep? Did your DS express interest in attending NMMI or was he just offered a spot out of the blue? In other words, what do you think the factor was that got him this prep school spot?

Thank you.

Congratulations Haze!!!

I, too, have sooo many questions! Please share anything you find out!

Where are you from? We are in NY.

Congratulations Haze,

My DS is still waiting on word for prep. He called admissions day before yesterday and they still hadn't heard anything from the committee. I'm hoping this is a good sign since it hadn't been an outright no :). DS was told originally decisions would be made by mid month.

Haze,

Happy to PM you regarding questions about NMMI. Again, a FANTASTIC opportunity and way to get to KP!

To answer the question about getting in to NMMI, we were not exactly sure on what got our DS in other than he must have been competitive yet fell a bit short on either GPA or an ACT/ SAT score. Our DS did express interest when contacting admissions regarding a prep slot if offered although I am not sure if this had any bearing. NMMI will definitely bring your DS or DD up to where they need to be and fully prepare them to enter KP. From talking to other NMMI preps that went on to KP, they felt that it made their first year there much easier than had they gone directly out of high school. This year USMMA sponsored 40 preps and only a handful did not get accepted into the class of 2018.

PeaceBstill: you are so right on with what you say and I'm sure motivating to those who are dreaming the dream.

Dear wtdoorusna80 -
our son is still on hold as well- which apparently as of April 1st, is now a national waiting list ranked and developed from the state "hold" list. To answer your question, we are not seeing any movement on the portal- but some with hold status have in recent days seen the hold field empty. This apparently is an indication that the cadet is getting a prep school offer. Most I am sure will accept but some, for whatever personal reason, may reject their appointment. The Cadet Reply Date is April 15 - and after that cadets from the national waiting list will be offered appointments in order of merit.

Our son has been encouraged by so many over the course of this exciting and frankly nail biting process and we would like to pass it on to you - in a nut shell "keep the dream alive" if the KP opportunity remains your child's objective, and for some reason does not get the appointment this year- May i offer/borrow the battle cry from James Lawrence of the war of 1812; "don't give up the ship" :thumb:

I agree with the sentiment that: if KP calls great. If not, plan B/C/D are already in the works.

It's time to take a 'burn the boats' mentality... Go forward and don't look back at what wasn't.

And I won't be re-applying next year... My community college instead of highschool approach to school has put me in the position being able to obtain a BS in ME or Chem in 2 years. The lack of a USCG license is a downer... but hey, I can make up for that with a PhD!

You will have to pay out the nose for a PHD. If you have the desire to attend KP don't limit yourself.

prep school factor

Haze,

Just out of curiosity how did you receive a spot as a sponsored prep? Did your DS express interest in attending NMMI or was he just offered a spot out of the blue? In other words, what do you think the factor was that got him this prep school spot?

Thank you.

Our DS did express interest in prep school options at both the academies he applied for (USMA and USMMA) but it was out of conversation and not anything he signed or made formal- somewhere along the way someone remembered hence our pleasant surprise. He was deemed 3Q'd by USMA but did not get in.

We are in a highly competitive area but also happens to be one of the bigger states (Illinois). Students at our high school excel very well and over 80% are college bound. Our DS is a competitive candidate with academics, leadership and sports but we take this offer as a means to explain that his test scores or GPA may not be as high as they'd like? Otherwise we coundn't even begin to explain the decisive factor as his admissions contact never went into those details.

a handful did not get accepted?

CaKPDad -

Thank you! Interested in knowing how those handful of prepsters did NOT get accepted? If someone follows the rules, does well academically, passes the CFA, gets a nomination....are that a road to acceptance? Also, will those who did not get accepted be able to use their year at NMMI for regular college credit?

As far as the students that did not make it, about 3 did not return after the Christmas break for personal reasons. The remainder did not make it due to academics as far as our DS understood. When the sponsored prep attends Indoc this summer, they meet with a representative from USMMA to sign a contract that basically states that if they keep their grades up, don't screw up and get their congressional nomination etc, they will be accepted into the following year's class at USMMA. From what we have heard, if they maintain a 2.2 or higher, they should be good. Don't be fooled by the 2.2 GPA. The classes at NMMI are tough, especially if your DS or DD bypasses the intro classes. What is good is that the class sizes are small and they want you to succeed. If your DS or DD puts in the effort they should be just fine.

Not this year but a few years ago, a mom told me her daughter got a D in Physics at NMMI and although she was a sponsored prep and her overall GPA did exceeded the minimum, they did not give her an appointment.

Well that's certainly cause for concern! Do you think there could have been other factors? And I'm also thinking/guessing they are being reviewed along the way and given chances to fix any issues?
