I've been getting a lot of questions about "THUDGATE" recently. I will be including a map of the stadium/parking and where "Thudgate" will be. I definitely hope to see all of you there. It's a monster Tail-Gate. We invite all falcons, fans, cadets, family, friends, opposing teams and their fans/family too. We HONOR our military men and women; past, present, and cadets for what they have or will give to their country. We never miss a "Thudgate" at a home game. Many times, we even take "Thudgate" on the road. E.g. Navy, Army, Wyoming, CSU, etc... Hope to see you all in a few weeks.

Here's the map. I'll bump this thread as necessary or admin/mods can pin it. Thanks, and "GO FALCONS".

Guys -- Can you advise me on what a night game at Falcon Stadium might feel like? We're thinking of going to the Hawaii game as a fun thing to do before picking up our DD for the Thanksgiving break. But the 7:30 p.m. start time has me spooked...is it going to be incredibly cold and windy? We're from HI with a low cold tolerance anyway and need to consider whether we will be miserable or whether it will be tolerable with the right gear. Will the cadets be there as well?

The cadets will be there and it could be: very cold, cold, chilly, surprisingly warm, or a combination of all of the above!!

Plan for the worst...and go and have a great time!!! :thumb:

Flieger is correct about the weather. "YOU DON'T KNOW". Couple years ago, we played a 7pm night game in November against Texas Christian University. (TCU). Between the hours of 4pm when we started to tailgate and 10pm when the game was basically over, it had: Rained, Snowed, Hailed, Sleeted, dry, wet, windy, and calm. I am not exaggerating. After an hour of tailgating, we had to move our RV and cars to create a wind/sleet block, Our seats in the stadium were wet, but when we got up to get a drink or use the rest room; when we came back there was a layer of ICE on the seats.

The average temperature during this 6 hour period fluctuated between 22 and 13 degrees. YES, 13 degrees. About half way through the game, people noticed that many of the cadets were no longer in their seats. (Cadets MUST ATTEND ALL HOME GAMES). Some thought the cadets said "The heck with this, we're leaving". That isn't what happened. On average, there were a couple hundred cadets hanging out in the "REST ROOMS". The weather was so miserable that there was NO FLYOVER and NO PARACHUTING.

Now; the week prior and the after the TCU game, the weather was nice. Averaging in the 40-50's. This is the front range of the Rocky Mountains. You never know what's going to happen. The only school in the area not like this is Albuquerque (UNM). The Rocky Mountains do a big curve around Las Vegas, New Mexico. Albuquerque is actually on the WEST side of the mountains. Their weather is more stable. But when the weather/wind/moisture CLIMBS those mountains and finally reach the top...... There's only one place for it to go after that. DOWN HILL; REALLY FAST. And in it's path is Laramie (UW), Cheyenne, Ft Collins (CSU), Denver, Colorado Springs (Air force), Pueblo, etc... We average approximately 300+ days a year of sunshine. Unfortunately, those other 60+ days a year can really kick your butt.

I know thanksgiving isn't really a lot of time to fly a cadet back to Hawaii and get them back by Monday. If it were me. I'd save the money. Encourage your kid to get invited to a fellow cadet's (Usually local) for thanksgiving. (That's what we do; we invite a bunch of cadets over for thanksgiving). Give him $500 to splurge on his guest and their family. (Cheaper than the plane tickets). Watch the game on TV on the Beach of Hawaii. Tell you're kid you love them. Then; save the time and money for Christmas break. No way would I come from Hawaii to Colorado Springs in November for thanksgiving. Mind you; I'm use to this weather. I live 2 hours from the academy. There were days, like 3 day weekends, in the first 2 years that my son wanted me to pick him up and bring him home for the weekend. The weather was crap. I said: "Sorry; you're stuck down there. I'm not coming to get you".

Anyway; sorry for the scare tactic, but it is the truth. You never know what the weather is going to be like. Especially in the Oct-Nov and Mar-April time frame. This past january, I don't think the temperature ever went BELOW 40 degrees during the day. It can be exceptionally warm to. Don't try and figure it out. Best of luck. (If it was me, I'd still stay in Hawaii for Thanksgiving and plan a bigger christmas). Best to you. mike....

Thanks for the reality check, Mike. We will actually be coming to the mainland anyway to spend Thanksgiving with other family (another kid in college in the east) so were just going to come through CO as a good first leg on our travels...pick up our daughter and then proceed to meet other family on the east coast. Agree that coming home to HI is not an option for the short period...but since we were going to be on the mainland anyway...Yes, probably a gamble due to weather...we'll have to see...Thanks for all the information, though and great advice!

Haha, memories. That was probably one of the more miserable experiences I have had at the Academy. All exasperated by the fact that we were in blues... But you are right, the restrooms were packed.

What was REALLY MISERABLE, is that we LOST BY 3 lousy points!!! If we're going to put up with that weather, it would have been nice to win.

Keep in mind that Colorado is very dry...even when it is snowing. So 40 degrees in Colorado probably feels like 60 degrees in Hawaii. Proper clothing (layers) is essential as it could be 20 degrees. I'd invest in good clothing. Check out the ski sales during parents weekend if you are in town. Great prices! I'd also consider a bunch of those hot packs to place in your gloves and socks.

Hey Folks!!!! Are you ready for Parent's Weekend; Labor Day Weekend; Falcon Football; and THUDGATE!!!!!

Looking forward to seeing many of you again and meeting some of you for the first time. The first post in this thread has the map. We'll be starting at Thudgate some time around 8-9am.

If you come looking for me, and we haven't met before, there happens to be 4 or 5 Mike's in our crowd. But if you mention "Mike from Wyoming", I am the only Mike from there. Look forward to seeing/meeting you all. Good chance for many of you to meet each other too. See you soon. Mike...\
