Danvers -

U.S. Congressman John F. Tierney (D-MA) invites all high school students in Massachusetts’s Sixth Congressional District who have an interest in learning more about the admissions process for one of the nation’s service academies to attend Academy Night 2009 on Thursday, Sept. 24, 7 to 9 p.m., in the Health Professions Building, Room F119, on the Danvers Campus of North Shore Community College.

Representatives from the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Air Force Academy, the U.S. Military Academy and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy will all be in attendance to speak with prospective students. Such students must send a completed application packet to Congressman Tierney’s Peabody district office by Nov. 1, after which the congressman’s Academy Review Board will evaluate each application, conduct interviews and make recommendations for names to be submitted for nomination to the respective academies in December.

In order to be considered eligible, all applicants must be citizens of the United States, legal residents of the 6th District of Massachusetts, unmarried with no children and at least 17 years of age but no older than 23 as of July 1, 2010.

Additionally, representatives from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, Maine Maritime Academy, Massachusetts Maritime Academy and Norwich University will also be available to speak with potential applicants.

For more information about applying to any of the service academies, contact Claudia Neidhardt in Congressman Tierney’s office at 978-531-1669.
