Our son has received his appointment and nomination to KP. We wanted to get him a nice watch, suitable for sea duty. We were hoping maybe a Timex quartz or equal. (LOL) Well, he has informed us the best watch for sea duty is the SS Rolex Submariner. Can any one shed some light on this situation? thanks

I think this has come up before. Here's what we'll say, get a cheap walmart-timex-digital watch. Your mid will be in a foreign country and working on machinery while out to sea. Not the most friendly environment for an expensive watch.

Make it a graduation present from KP.

Welcome to the class of 2015, see ya indoc!

Beyond.

One step at a time

Your candidate might want to focus on what kind of watch he/she wants while trying to survive Plebe year. No watches or time telling devices of any kind are allowed during Indoc but sometime after Acceptance Day Plebes are allowed time pieces. Something relatively indestructible and inexpensive is best. And it is VERY helpful if it has a built in alarm clock just in case your Plebe finds a hiding spot to catch a quick nap between classes. Don't want to be late for class!! I think your DS will have a much better understanding of what works for sea year after completing Plebe year. And I'm pretty sure it ain't gonna be a Rolex.

Just my 2 cents.

Watch

DS is in the middle of his second sea year. He bought a REAL Rolex in China last year for $35! Actually, we bought a cheap digital watch before he went to sea last year for $15 and he still wears it. If you want a really rugged waterproof watch that will glow in the dark without having to press any buttons look for a Luminox. It is a favorite of the Navy, Air Force and cops. A company in NYC called Jomashop will deliver it right to KP. I have worn mine for a long time. It runs about $175. Give him one for Christmas and just get a cheap one for sea duty.

dock, you have just won the award for "The Best Thread Title for Subject Matter" category! I think the moderators will throw your way a lifetime membership to the forum! Congratulations!:yay::yay:

I am not being sarcastic, I thought it was very clever!

DS bought a inexpensive watch at the NEX right after Indoc- I believe he said he wished he had taken one with him. It was important to know what time it was always....

I don't know about you but my 15 dollar walmart watch works just as well as some "SS Rolex guy who works on a boat that sinks". Oh and Thats just one more thing for some guy in Djibouti to steal. Hey I guess it's sorta the same as donating money to starving children in Africa.

Agree with the above....a nice watch for sea is not needed. If you wanted a nicer type of watch a G Shock is sometimes liked, but I would go with something like the Timex Ironman or similar style.

Save the expensive watch for KP graduation or beyond.

I bought my DS a cheap watch from Wal Mart for his first year. Come Christmas, being they cannot take anything back with them, I did get him a G-Shock and he was surprised. You will have so much to buy to get him ready for INDOC that I would suggest you get by with the least amount of money for a watch as possible. The compression shorts cost the real money.

I agree with the cheep watch theory, but I want to add that the band is probably just as important. Our son sails and is around the water all the time. Everything he has needs to be able to get very wet and keep working. You may want to look at a good cheap watch that is waterproof and has a Velcro band so that it will not rot away after being dunked in the water 40 or 50 times.

Luminox it is

Thanks for all the help. After careful thought and deliberation, it is the Luminox Seal for son and the Rolex Datejust for Dad.

watch

You will be really happy with the Luminox. My wife is a Navy 0-4 and she liked the Luminox Navy Seal model so much she got one in pink, so "dock" get one for yourself!
