As I'm sure some of you already know how it feels, I'm STILL waiting patiently to hear back from the Naval Academy. Two of my friends have been accepted to West Point and the USMMA. I'm trying my best to be patient and to keep waiting, but I wanted to post this today because of something that came in the mail.

Back in August I applied for a Navy ROTC scholarship, but my application was weaker than my application for the Academy... BUT anyways, today I received a letter in the mail notifying me that I did not recieve the scholarship... At this point I'm obviously feeling down and am starting to worry. Does not receiving a NROTC scholarship pretty much mean that I won't get an appointment to the Naval Academy? I have two nominations, and a very strong application. Please help or give some advice/ guidance. Im starting to worry, but I'm still trying to be calm and patient.

    Thanks,
    Phil

One does not have to do with the other. The ROTC board and the USNA board are completely different and have nothing to do with one another. Both boards weigh things differently. I don't think they even speak to each other about common candidates or know if a candidate gets accepted to one or the other Just because you got rejected to one doesn't mean you won't get the other. Stay positive. I know how you feel i'm in the same boat and its killing me as well.

I'm worried that if I'm not able to receive an ROTC scholarship if this means that I am not even close to being able to getting an appointment.. But then again another side of me wonders if I did not receive a scholarship because I am going to receive an appointment? Im not quite sure... I just dont understand really how I did not receive a ROTC scholarship but yet I got 2 nominations and I have such a strong application. (and I'm not saying that it is not competetive or diffficult to receive an ROTC scholarship...)

I understand what you're saying but i think that ROTC looks for different things than USNA. I really doubt not getting the scholarship has anything to do with receiving an appointment.

    Keep your  going.

There are fewer slots for NROTC than for USNA. And you were only considered for the slots at your five colleges.
    The criteria are different.

I guess I am just upset now. Because I was accepted into Embry Riddle and I was waiting to hear back from Purdue, both of which were my NROTC schools... so now im not sure what to do for a "back-up"

ROTC and USNA do not share knowledge ala "We are gonna give Joe Sailor and appointment, so don't give him a scholarship...."

You do need a back up plan. You need to know what you will do if a TWE arrives. My son's back up plan was to attend Texas A&M, no scholarship (he got NROTC scholarship to a school he didn't want) and apply to USNA again. I think that made the waiting a tad bit easier, because he knew exactly what he was going to do in the event of a TWE in our mailbox. So, you need to decide if you want to attend Embry Riddle, Purdue, or some community college and try to strengthen your application and try again or simply attend another college and be satisfied there.

NROTC is not the only scholarship game in town. The kind of kids who are competitive for ROTC scholarships and SA appointments are also competitive for many other scholarships at most colleges and universities. At this point, you should be pursuing all possibilities with fervor. And all avenues of financial aid.

    Hope is not lost......

My son also received a rejection letter from NROTC. We could laugh about it because he has an appointment to USNA. We had felt all along that it would be a tougher road to get the NROTC scholarship that the appointment, and this proved true. He plans to hold on to that rejection letter for some additional motivation to do well at USNA and beyond! Having been rejected by NROTC does not mean that you have no chance for USNA!

HAHAHA! Bud, EXACT thing happened to me today. I applied NROTC as well and got a rock thrown at me when I received at text from my mom "You have a letter from the Department of the Navy". After about 30 minutes of maximum stress and worry I tear open the letter I thought I'd been waiting for for 2 years and...NOT what I wanted.

Didn't get the scholarship. Still waiting...praying maybe the next alarm will be the real one. Hang in there, some of us are still waiting on the edge of our seats as well!

    Best wishes- Go Navy!

Ok, here's a question in the inverse, if you get a scholarship from NROTC, does that lessen your chances for a USNA appointment?

Note previous post from jennyp, USNA and NROTC appointments/scholarships are mutually exclusive.

Patience Patience, I know not easy, but you will know soon.

The Boards for each don't talk to each other about who they give scholarships to and who they give appointments to. I received an instant NROTC scholarship in December and I received my appointment to USNA on February 22. So to answer your question no I don't think it lessens your chances for an appointment.

MANY are still waiting, and you are in good company!! Since they are exclusive of each other, try not to over analyse the NROTC scholarship, and focus on the fact that you have put forth a strong application for USNA!! Remember that nothing is this process defines you, or deminishes your hard work and accomplishments!! No matter what happens, continue to pursue your dreams!!

Does anyone know how Marine Option scholarships factor into these numbers?

True only in the broad brush. Once the USNA apptmts are segmented, the competition for USNA is light years greater for USNA. One of those where gross stats are sorely deceiving.

And in the context of light years, ROTC is that much "easier" (neither's "easy") to receive a scholarship than it is a USNA apptmt. Where ROTC gets notably dicey, is trying to get a slot @ Pitt vs. Notre Dame, Cornell, UVA.

Agree, with certain respects. Information used for your NROTC application can be used for your USNA app. Says so right on the CIS, and the recruiter I was working with knew everything about me before I walked into the office because I did USNA's application first.
My suggestion is is that there's little to no dependence whether or not your accepted or rejected from one of the other. Good luck to you.

I've aloud my self a couple days to cool off and be able to rid myself of worry and being upset. I feel that maybe it was God saying he didn't want me at Embry Riddle or Purdue... I still am trusting in God everyday and that He has His best for me and I'm praying every day that my letter of appointment comes in the mail soon! I hope all of you also get yours!

ALSO! Can someone PLEASE tell me this.. Who does an appointment come from? As in.. how does it arrive? From my normal mailman? USPS? Fed Ex? Also do the appointments from USNA come in just a letter? or in a manilla folder? or what..? Please describe it! Thanks!

My BFE came in a big manilla folder, inside it was a thick blue folder with a handsigned letter of appointment. Along with this folder there are some documents that you have to fill out etc. But the nicest thing is that nice official looking blue folder:shake:
