Congratulations to all the Appointees. You've completed a great deal of work to get this far. But there is much more to come, as you can only imagine.

The next step is to decide if you want to accept your appointment or reject it.

    Why do I say that?

Because, if you know right now you don't want to attend KP, please show your integrity (expected by all Academies) by letting USMMA know right now.

It will open a slot for someone else who wants to go FROM YOUR STATE. A young man or young woman can benefit from your honesty. It is the honorable thing to do. If you wait till the last day to reject, that opening to your state is GONE and goes into a US pool of candidates. Your state loses that slot on the last day. So does the "next in line" dying to get into KP.

Now of course, if you need time to think, great. I know many wait for their "first choice" ie: another academy. Think things through and if you've made your decision to go elsewhere please contact any Academy that has appointed you, so the slot is open. Thank you! And again, congrats on the Appointment!

Great advice. I am still waiting on the other SA to get back to me on their decision. If I don't get in, KP will be my next #1.

Thank you thank you for this post. Those who are waiting and have been waiting now for 2 years will greatly appreciate others doing the right thing.

As someone who has waited two years for this, I agree.

You both are so very welcome. I have a different perspective as a parent of a soon-to-be 2013 graduate, which is why I posted. I am well aware of those who are hoping and waiting to receive that appointment, especially if this is the second time you have been through the process. And, with the economy the way it is, there are more applicants which brings higher expectations/qualifications.

You have until May 1 to decide.
Don't let anyone rush you to decide.
Make the decision when and if you're ready.

USMMA is my 2nd option if West Point or Annapolis give me a No-Go.

I think people need to go back and read carefully the whole initial posting.
It said, if you know you don't want to go to KP, let them know now.
It also said, if you don't know, think it over.

Let me combine a couple of posts:

If you know for sure that you don't want to go to KP, let them know now.
If you don't know, think it over.
You have until May 1 to decide.
Don't let anyone rush you to decide.
Make the decision when and if you're ready.

No, I think you need to go and read what I posted earlier. All I said was that I am waiting for my #1's to get back to me. Stop going off and trying to tell people to reject USMMA if we don't want to go there.

You fail to understand that one doesn't go through all this paperwork, interviews, DoDMerb and so forth just to say "Oh, USMMA is not where I want to go", after beating out many applicants from their state. I beat out my state's competitors by having a better overall packet. I earned this appointment. This appointment is mine.

Good luck with that - I understand your position and as you have pointed out later in this thread you have earned the right to have the time until May 1st to decide, and I am not begrudging you that - not one day of it. If you decline your appointment it will be given to some other deserving applicant.

All I will say is that getting through USMMA is certainly no easier than getting through any other Service Academy, so if you do accept your appointment, make sure it's something you are comfortable with and even though today it's your second or third choice, when you report in July, it's your only/first choice an you are fully committed to seeing it through. Otherwise it will be a hard road to travel and make it to graduation.

    Good Luck.

Isn't it lovely how emotions come to the surface like this?

Anyway, I have a USMMA offer of appointment. Like others, my possibly options also include other service academies.

Like everybody else in the process, i went through the same paperwork, medicals, nomination processes, etc. In turn, i earned my appointment. I have until May 1 to decide what to do with it. Beyond that, it is nobody else's business. Mako has a point, if perhaps not the best way to say it.

KP2013mamadrama, I know you only want the best for your kid, and for the antagonizing wait to end. It's like that for everybody else. You aren't special in that respect.

I also happen to know that I am from your state (NY). As you might know, I am also waiting to hear from the USAFA and USNA. I hope I hear from them before May 1, so I don't have to accept the USMMA appointment, only to give it up later to go to said AFA or NA. Yet, I don't go around begging others in my state/district to give up their slot so that I can go. It's not right. I know you only mean well, but the implications of what you are saying say otherwise.

    Just some food for thought.

PS: Best of luck to you and your DS.

Your points are well made and well taken. However, if you go back through KP2013mamadrama's posts on this thread carefully you will see that:

    1. She did not make the remarks you are apparently attributing to her... or at least she balanced them with take as long as you need. In other words, take as long as you need but no longer. That's certainly a fair comment to make.

    2. She is not waiting for her DS to be appointed... she is waiting for her DS to graduate this spring.

As I said your points are well taken... but when commenting on someone else's comments it is usually best to understand what thos comments were first. This is not meant to be an attack, just simply want to point out what seems to me at least, to be an oversight on your part here.

Actually from what I can read KP2013mamadrama's DS is ready to graduate from KP so she is not anxiously waiting like many of us. She had something heartfelt to say that obviously some appointees don't agree with. That's fine. Of course you are allowed to apply to several academies and anyone with an appointment in hand will take the time needed to make the right choice. Rational people will make decisions that benefit themselves. I would agree however that there should be an interview process that would allow KP to see the whole person and their level of commitment to the academy. Perhaps there wouldn't be such a high attrition rate if KP accepted other highly qualified applicants with a true commitment to KP over applicants with a "better overall packet" with a marginal at best commitment to the academy.

As an aside, since you have your appointment, and you have the right to take whatever time you need to make your decision, you in fact hold all the cards. You could have ignored the comments, or disagreed in a productive manner. Yet you chose to be blatantly disrespectful to someone's mother. Something I am sure you would not have done face to face, or even if you were identifiable.

I'm sorry i missed this post.

It seems i might have been misinformed. Therefore, I am sorry KP2013mamadrama. However, I think your OP (original post) was misleading and somewhat condescending. The advice was not asked for, and caused quite a bit of trouble.

Perhaps next time you should only provide input when it is asked for, so it wouldn't be taken out of context?

    PS: GL to your DS!

    "HeWantsTheBFE":

I love it - in spite of clearly being in error the arrogance and personal attacks of the 17-18 YO on the parent of a soon to graduate USMMA Mid continues.

Perhaps next time you should think before you speak or type. Of course now go ahead and direct your attack to me. I'm a tough, thick skinned USMMA grad who looked over the transom at graduation from KP over thirty years ago and has had and continue to have a great post-graduation career. I also have a son who is now a graduate so there's really nothing you can say to me I'll be insulted by. All that said - I assure you regardless of if you get into your either of your first two choices or fallback on your fallback of your fallback my alma mater - I am confident in saying if you report to any of the three of them with the arrogance and attitude you convey in these posts I would be very surprised to see you at any sort of SA Alumni function in four and half years, unless your attitude will have been changed and you are much more well adjusted, and at least lower key in how you expose your arrogance, as well as your ignorance.

Also don't worry, this is my lastpost on this thread - good luck to all!

How accurate is this? Why should it matter that someone else FROM YOUR STATE gets the slot? Wouldn't the best person from a a national pool of candidates be at least as desirable/good as someone FROM YOUR STATE?
