First, let me clarify, this is in no way a post that is in any way angry towards being rejected in years past for the STEM summer program, rather it is a message of hope to those who have been in the same boat and still hope to apply for an appointment to USNA. Every year I was able to apply for STEM I did so. Within a week of the application opening every year, I had my application finished and sent in. I was dedicated to getting in. Yet, every year I received the same letter, "Dear applicant, I am sorry to inform you...". Fortunately, I stayed the course, was accepted to Summer Seminar, received an LOA, and, as of today, received a nomination which guarantees my appointment to USNA. So, my message to you, don't stop pursuing your dream of attending USNA if you were not accepted to STEM. Rather, use it as motivation to push harder to achieve the real goal, an appointment.
