These forums have been incredibly helpful so far, but I have a question on how the service academies (West Point) go about recruiting their athletes. I am really want to go to WP (class of 2016). My academics are above average but I would like to think that my running times are decent enough to get looked at by them (15:10 3 mile, is that good enough). Do you know how I would go about asking the coach without sound too arrogant? there probably in the middle of indoor championships, so I have no idea how long it'll take them to answer back. . thanks a lot

</long story>

Friend of mine is getting some interest about XC from west point and he ran 15:58 5k XC as a junior.

Yea thats great news for him. Im not sure what the conversion is for 3 miles to 5k, but I think its like 35 secs? But hopefully ill hear something from them. Im a junior also and do u know if he filled out the recruiting questionaire, our did they email him?

Just send the head coach an e-mail introducing yourself with a short bio (both academic and athletic) expressing your interest in attending WP. Trust me, he (or one of his staff - he has a coach that deals with recruits) will get back to you. You will not be bothering them.

For my DS, he was told to have his high school coach contact the coach if the hs coach felt he was competitive enough for D1 sports.

Go Army!

I'm a recruited xc/track runner, so if you have any specific questions, PM me.
Although it's questionable as to whether or not I'll be running cross country for the team or if I'll just stick with the mid distance guys, since I'm more of a miler.

I started the process by filling out the recruiting questionnaire online the fall of my junior year, which you have been linked to. I got a brochure in the mail a little while later, and was told to email Coach Engle if I had any questions or I wanted to update him with my progress. Once I started dropping some better times that spring, I did email Coach Engle and then started receiving some calls from Coach Penn, one of his assistant coaches who handles the bulk of the recruiting.

As far as I can tell, my recruited status doesn't guarantee anything, and tryouts and cuts are still held in September. It just meant that my file was handled by MAJ Childers rather than MAJ Belmont, my regional admissions officer.

Again, PM me any specific questions you have about the process, if you'd like.

Agree with LivinLarger. It is great you are starting process early and that you are familiar this forum. West Point T & F coaching staff found my daughter via her beRecruited online profile (great tool--generated lots of interest from coaches) and started calling her the summer of her junior year. West Point was not on her radar until that time and she knew very little about the school and application process.....huge learning curve and time commitment the Fall of her senior year. Wish you the best of luck and hope to congratulate you one day on your appointment to the Class of 2016.

One more thing....make sure you represent yourself with the "full" package. Excellent academics and outstanding leadership as well as your athletic ability. You need it all....
