Tragic News

yes, my DS texted me last nite the same news... I had trouble sleeping last night.... Do we know the contact info for her parents? I would love to at least send a card.

I plan on giving my DS an extra hug this weekend.

My son called too. Terrible, can't even imagine. He thought she was from Indiana. She was in his section. My thoughts and prayers are with her family

Mine called to late last night too quite upset. I am so glad my husband will see him tonight at an away game and I will be at KP with him for Easter.
Please let us know about arrangements. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family.

Is2day- You have been there for so many all year long. Take care of yourself as well. The whole Kings Point family is in our constant prayers today.

Our son tells us she was a well liked, newly minted 4th Classman.

This untimely loss sure brings in to focus the precious fragility of our short time on earth. I cannot even imagine the pain her loved ones are wrestling with.

Sure makes “”Plebe Killer classes”, Setbacks, difficult instructors, and even disenrollment seem rather microscopic life events to deal with.

God Bless to everyone at and from KP. Special thoughts and prayers for this family.

My deepest regrets go to the entire KP family.

Its a very somber and heartbreaking day at Kings Point...my thoughts and prayers are with her family and our Kings Point family.

Official release from the Academy:

My thoughts and prayers are with MIDN Sanchez's family and extended KP family.

----------------------------
The following is a message from the Academy Chief of Staff:

Members of the Kings Point Family,

It is with a heavy heart that I must report the death of Midshipman Marisa Sanchez, 4/c. MIDN Sanchez, 19, collapsed during softball practice on Tuesday evening. She was stabilized by our EMT squad, and then transported to the hospital, where she passed away last night. A resident of Connersville, Indiana, Marisa was a Marine Transportation major, a member of the USMMA Softball and Volleyball teams, and a midshipman in First Company.

MIDN Sanchez's mother, grandmother, and brother are arriving on campus later today, and her father is expected tomorrow; they will be staying in Melville Hall, and are our guests. Please give them the support and warmth that they need during this difficult time. Plans for a memorial service will be announced once arrangements have been made with them.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Marisa's family, as well as to her classmates and teammates, members of the EMT squad, and all the midshipmen touched by her.

Respectfully,
CAPT Eric Wallischeck
Chief of Staff
United States Merchant Marine Academy

I can only echo all of the posts here. Out thoughts and prayers are with the family, the mids, staff and the whole Kings Point Family.

Her family, friends and all of KP has been in my thoughts and prayers all day. Please let me know if there is something we can do or send.

additional information

Dear Kings Point Family,
By now all of you know of the tragic loss of plebe Marisa Sanchez of Connersville, Indiana. The entire academy grieves for her loss and for her family. Many of you have contacted me about making donations to a memorial for Marisa or asking what can be done for her family. As some of you may know, Marisa's father was deployed in Afghanistan and will not be back into New York until Thursday, April 1. Marisa's mother and brother are currently staying on campus in Melville and are being cared for by the entire extended Kings Point family, faculty and staff. Understandably, the family will not be making funeral arrangements until Marisa's Dad arrives back in the USA, so we know nothing about those arrangements at this time.

MARAD Chief David Matsuda personally called us today to offer support and sympathy, and to let us know that the Maritime Administration is doing everything humanly possible for the family and the midshipmen who are suffering at this time. They are providing counseling for midshipmen and Capt. Fell is working on getting midshipmen to Indiana for the funeral. Indiana Parent Association members may be called upon to provide housing and/or food for those visiting midshipmen. You will be notified about this once plans are finalized. In the meantime, we ask that all memorials from state Parent Association Chapters be delayed until the family has time to make their wishes known. We will contact you once the memorial decision has been made.

Cards and letters of support may be mailed to the family of Marisa Sanchez (Lisa and Gil) at 2116 West St. Rd. 44, Connersville, IN 47331. Please keep Marisa and her family in all your prayers.
