My husband thinks it would be nice to travel on Amtrack into New York but I am unfamilar with the station that would be closest to Highland Falls. Does anyone have an idea on this?

Also, I am just curious...are there any home schoolers on here that have been accepted into West Point? We know of a home schooled student last year that was accepted.

Amtrak won't take you up to Highland Falls. You can take Amtrak into NYC and change to the MTA, Metro-North line, out of Grand Central Station to get up near West Point. Most cadets get off Metro-North at either Garrison or Peekskill station and then take a taxi to West Point. My cadet has traveled via train between West Point and Pennsylvania several times. It is not hard to do.

Metro-North: http://www.mta.info/mnr/

If you do take the train you will still want a rental car. You can take taxis but there is no taxi service in Highland Falls so they come from Newburgh or one of the other larger towns. It can be a hassle and expensive. If you use Enterprise car rental they will pick you up at the train station and you will be ready to go.

Thanks guys! That was exactly what I needed to know reguarding the Metro-North. But I am running into problems with Grand Central. The only station near there that it is showing that my train would run through would be Pennstation. How does this affect what you are saying?

Two different stations in NYC. Metro North runs from Grand Central, at 42nd and Lexington [equivalent to 4th Avenue]; many Amtrak trains come into town at Penn Station, 33rd and 7th. You would need to come upstairs and get a taxi on 8th Avenue uptown to 42nd and then across to Lex- doable, and not a long ride but depending on time of day I've seen some long taxi lines. Alternative would be the subway, but you would need to change trains- 8th Avenue line to42nd,and then #7 across, again doable but I wouldn't want to do it at rush hour with luggage.

Our son was home schooled his whole life and received his appointment to the Class of 2014.

I am a homeschooled cadet candidate for the Class of 2014 too!!
