My family is already making plans for I-Day 2011. In my appointment packet the date is June 30th. Can a appointee stay in Bancroft I-Day minus 1? Do they pay for airfare when reporting?

speaking of Bancroft, Do plebes stay in the same room during plebe summer that they will be residing in during the academic year? Or is there a switch before the brigade returns?

No, never the same rooms as they are dispersed throughout the company and for the pleasure of upperclassmen, being given opportunity to see lowly Plebes move all their worldly possessions in 30 seconds or less 3 floors and 2 wings away!:biggrin:

Roommate determination varies from company to company, and may allow for same roommates as Plebe summer. Most change.:thumb:

I am guessing it would depend on company as well, but are ac year room mates assigned or are you able to help choose?

    wiscyellowjacket,

I HIGHLY recommend NOT staying in Bancroft Hall until you report. You want to enjoy your last night of freedom and hopefully, spend it with your family.

In your permit to report package, you should have information about travel arrangements/airfare.

Many soon-to-be-Plebes spend the night before I-Day in Bancroft. Especially west coasters. Info on that and travel to I-Day will be further detailed in the PTR packet.

    Congratulations on your fantastic choices!

This does vary by company. For example, DS's company was told they could choose roomates after Plebe summer, but then for first semester, were "randomly" assigned roommates that didn't include those they chose. Word is, when they go back for 2nd semester they will actually get to choose their roommates for real this time! :thumb:

My Plebe changed rooms and roommates TWICE just during Plebe Summer. No change during first semester bur rumor is that they will change both rooms and room mates for second semester. Also, the Brigade goes from 30 companies to 36 next year, so lots of changes in store at end of this semester.

No information on staying in Bancroft night before I-Day, but I do have a story from this past I-Day. As we were viewing the swearing-in ceremony on I-Day, my younger son heard an out-of-breath young man ask a detailer who was standing close by what he should do about reporting. It seems that his flight was delayed in a major way (was supposed to get to Annapolis on I-Day eve) and he had just gotten to the Yard! The detailer said "follow me" and they both rushed off toward another entrance to Bancroft. Of course, we don't know how things turned out for the young man, but it is a lesson-learned about the importance of pre-planning.

My Plebe son has had the same roommates since I-Day. They have never switched! It will be interesting to see if they decide to change roommates if permitted upon return this weekend.

My plebe son has one roommate that is the same from Plebe summer, the other moved to room with other players of his sport, and then my son and his other roommate asked another friend to join them, so the 3 of them have gotten along very well since ac started and there were lots of phone calls back and forth during break to check on each other's grades, etc, which is nice to know that they are also supporting each other.

Fishbowl- If they are going to 36 companies, does that mean they will appoint more plebes this coming year? or does that number stays the same?

Number of plebes (and midshipman) will stay the same, just divided up into 36 companies. Some members of the 30 existing companies will be moving into the 6 new companies.

For women in each Company it gets a little complicated. Some will stay with each other all four years and others may be switched out during the four. Their room assignments are harder to figure since there are less options.

Ditto what MIHOSER wrote. My understanding is that members of each of the existing 30 companies have been given the option to volunteer to opt out of their company, but the volunteers can't chose what company they end up in. They need 6 volunteers per class per company. If they don't get enough volunteers, some will get 'voluntold'. As AF6872 indicates, this gets complicated with the women because they need to maintain the ratio of male/female as well. On the upside, going to 36 companies provides that many more company leadership opportunities to upperclassmen.

They will also do some balancing/rejecting to prevent "brain drain" of the existing companies.

Is this for real? Will travel actually be reimbursed for plebes traveling to Annapolis for I-Day? If so, are there other instances in which a mid's travel to and/or from home is reimbursable? What is the procedure?

Yes, travel expenses are reimbursed to the plebe. Mom and Dad will probably never see the money.

I believe the same holds true for summer assignments away from the Yard. But not trips home at Thanksgiving, Christmas or spring break.

The roommate situation varies by company. And it is more cooperative for females. (my observation.)

My plebe says she is going to a certain company (33 maybe?) with the bulk of 28 company and the remainder is going to another company. It's not a general re-shuffle. This is her current understanding. Which may be different on Friday, when leave ends.

In general, your son/daughter will only be reimbursed for airfare during summer training, if they elect to travel to/from the summer training location separately (i.e. coming off or going on leave). Normally this means that you will be reimbursed the government airfare price between the summer training location and BWI. Note: This does not apply to international travel.

The Commandant of Midshipmen has released a course of action notice on the transition to 36 companies (http://www.usna.edu/Commandant/Noti...ANSITITIONING_THE BRIGADE_TO_36_COMPANIES.pdf).

When a mid is reimbursed for travel is it "money that you never see"? In other words, does it go towards paying for something else?
