Travel to I-Day

My son had his deposited in his account directly and it wasn't used for anything else, to my knowledge.

When a mid is reimbursed for travel is it "money that you never see"? In other words, does it go towards paying for something else?

jumprope: Let me clarify this comment for you.......often parents pay for airline tickets.......mids are reimbursed via direct deposit in their account. The parents never see that money again!

Mids are also often reimbursed for travel to bowl games and hotel while there. It is offered when appropriate, the mids show paid receipt, and eventually reimbursement shows up in their account. The past two bowl games included reimbursement for airfare and hotel, I believe.

Reimbursed and then some for the bowl game.
1/C and 2/C get leave extended 2 days and an extra weekend.
3/C and 4/C get 2 extra weekends in the spring semester.

Wow, they were really desperate to get MIDN out there!!!!

This is great clarification :thumb:

DS had 3 roommates during plebe summer. Three of the four were roomies during first semester and as far as they know they will continue to be roommates during second semester.

As far as reimbursement for travel to I-Day, we drove DS (since we don't live far away). USNA reimburses based on so much money per mile traveled (one way). We never saw the money but my son said it did get deposited.

DS went to the Poinsettia Bowl. He will be getting reimbursed for his plane ticket, 2 night stay at the Grand Hyatt (they received a very cheap Midshipmen rate), and as JADLER3 said, he will get 2 free weekends during spring semester.:thumb:

I know my family and I will be driving up to Annapolis for I-day. Might spend some of the day before in either downtwn Annapolis or in D.C. but I am sure we will have an early dinner and turn in early at the hotel in order to rest up for the events of the following day.

If you live within driving distance for I-Day . . . arrive in the afternoon. Enjoy a nice, early dinner. Future plebe will be nervous but still try to get some good food into his/her mouth. Try to get a good night's sleep. Show up in the morning.

Of all the events you'll experience during the 4 yrs at USNA, I-Day is, in retrospect, one of the least important. It seems important at the time b/c it's the first. But there will be so many great events over the years that this will eventually pale in comparison. Thus, try not to overdo and overthink it, hard as that seems.

For the parents, I-Day is monumental b/c it is the day that you realize you are relinquishing your child to something larger and more encompassing than even you (to some extent). For the mids, however, it's merely the first day of a long journey. I have trouble remembering I-Day beyond the pix that my parents took. Many other days do stand out much more prominently. It's a matter of perspective.

Jumprope--I believe the full sum went into my mid's checking account, not to any other fund.

There is a reimbursement form for I-Day travel in the Permit to Report packet that usually comes sometime in late May as I recall. USNA1985 is right about I-Day, kids don't remember too much about it because it is a whirlwind of a day for them. Their families, OTH, wander around throughout the day sometimes catching glimpses of squads of Plebes at various outdoor processing stations. One of those being Plebes exiting the bus in Bancroft parking lot to the sound of detailers yelling at them. However, reality bit hard when we watched the two buff Marines close the large center doors of Bancroft behind the last company of Plebes at around 1930, knowing that we wouldn't see them again for six weeks!

I understand that there will be no physical additions to Bancroft. How could there be. Twelve additional offices and six Wardrooms will be created for six new companies (see letter referenced above). The firestorm continues as to who is moving and changing decks and companies. For firsties it doesn't seem like a big problem as they will be long gone. Those with some "pull" might stay where they are but it seems to be up in the air. Fall 2011 seems to be the initiation date for the new companies with new Plebes.

Do plebes going into the same company report at the same time on I-day? This would keep everyone in that company on a single schedule for the day I am guessing.

No, I believe your time to report on I-Day is based on the last number of your social security number.

Correct. The report time has no connect to company assignment. With no other knowledge, the reporting time seems to be effectively random. I'm confident USNA has this one figured out as to what is necessary and what works.:thumb::wink:

I was at the February 10-12 CVW and all the Mids said it was

Not happening. At least not next year.

ANNAPOLIS - The Naval Academy has decided against expanding from 30 to 36 the
number of companies in the Brigade of Midshipmen, an academy spokesman said.

"It was determined that increasing the number of companies in the brigade was not
as high a fiscal priority, or as important, as some other higher fiscal requirements,"
academy spokeswoman Deborah Goode said.

Agreed - Plebe son told us a month ago that the split to 36 companies was not happening because of budgetary reasons and that there were no more discussions on who was leaving their company.

Agreed - My Plebe son also told me the same exact thing.
