My wife and I were doing some investigation on how to proceed with health care coverage for DS after R-day. We found the following link on Tricare's website and found it to be very helpful. Just wanted to pass it along to the group.

Your DS/DD will be on tricare, like all other military members from the newest nonrate up to the admiral.

My recommendation is to keep them on yours (usually very cheap) as an “insurance” in the event they leave CGA. That’s what my parents did. Their medical needs will be tended to, however, so long as they’re wearing the cloth of the nation.

Non-Graduating Cadets

  • TRICARE coverage when you're released is determined by your Service (i.e. medical retirement or separation)
  • Separation leads to a loss of TRICARE coverage

You will be advised by admissions staff to keep your child on your own family insurance plan just in case they leave the academy early for any number of reasons. So don’t rush to drop the child coverage until you get all the academy briefings And can make an informed decision.

In addition to the excellent advice posted above, I recommend keeping your cadet on your dental insurance as well as medical insurance until they Swear-in again after their 3/C year (at a minimum).

Just a note - if you are a military or retired military family, your cadet is automatically removed as a dependent from your Tricare. If for some reason they left the Academy and still met the other dependent requirements they would need to be re-enrolled in DEERs to get back into Tricare as a dependent.

If you Cadet or Midshipman uses a non DOD provided healthcare provider...make sure they tell them they are US Military Active Duty and give them the Numbers on the back of their ID so the provider can bill Tri-Care. My MIDN, used an Emergency Room while skiing (yes aggressive sports behavior contributed). He did not give the number and it took a couple months to get the provider to bill Tri-Care.
