TWEs will be sent this week

How does that work exactly? Will he then be a year behind his peers?

My DS did the same and also received an appointment this year. As we told him, a good portion of his "peers" will not even finish college and few will do it in four years. A of couple of years down the road who will care anyway. Turned out to be the best thing that could have happened. He is way more prepared and the extra year of maturity and improving study habits at the college level will definitely help.
We also told him to think of it as being academically "red-shirted". Several of his athletic teammates were "red-shirted" and will also be in college a minimum of 5 years.
He could not be happier with how the whole process has played out thus far.

If USAFA is where your heart is and you receive a TWE, do not give up. Even if you don't receive a falcon foundation scholarship, there are still prep school options. I received my TWE last year around this time, applied to Northwestern Prep the same day and was accepted the day after. I went to NWP without any scholarship, applied myself, utilized the program to its potential, and was appointed to USAFA last month. In hindsight, the extra year of preparation was very much needed anyway.
A TWE does not mean no. Feel free PM me with questions about re-applying, prep school, or anything else of the sort.

Right, but from what I gather nobody has a TWE yet. I am still hoping and praying, but continue to gather information.

I am a teacher at a High School, so I would like to help promote the SA's at my school. I have learned SOOOO much through this process, and would like to give the option to others here. My school is not very knowledgable about SA's, ans I would like to change that. Thanks ALL for the information!!!

I'm in the same boat as you, I'm trying to get my son's high school in promoting the SA and I too have learned so much from this forum.

Do they tell you the specific areas they are looking for improvement ? How do you find out about prep school options?

@pa mom Last year, in the TWE, a few suggestions regarding things like test scores, fitness, and college courses were included. However, these were generic. I strongly suggest that your DD/DS contact their counselor directly- once the dust has settled- and kindly ask where they can improve. And from what I understand, candidates are automatically informed whether or not they will be given a prep school slot.

DS learned of the pending TWE from two different recent conversation with his ALO and an AFA admissions officer.

An interesting tidbit regarding AFROTC scholarships: there are fewer 4-year AFROTC scholarship awarded than AFA appointees - ~900 vs 1100.

So can I divert the thread slightly and ask if there is any reason other than geographical location why there seem to be so many kids on this forum with AFROTC scholarships and no USAFA?

Just heard that the Academy will begin notifying candidates this week if they are no longer being considered for an appointment.

Unfortunately I also learned that my DS will be one of the candidates that will be receiving the dreaded TWE. The good news is that he was awarded a AFROTC scholarship on Friday.

Good luck to everyone who is still waiting.[/QUOT

I am applying to class of 2020, I have never heard the term TWE, can you tell me what that means?

Absolutely do NOT let a TWE get you down! If your goal is to go to an academy, regroup and plan your next strategy. I'm eagerly awaiting news from USAFA, but I've gotten the dreaded "no" from USAFA not once, but twice; this is my third year applying. Keep your head up and persevere towards your goal of becoming an officer.

Class of 2020? Or class of 2021? TWE= Thin White Envelope (now days it's E for Email)...Means you were not accepted into SA.

At Northwestern Prep, the weaknesses of your application will become very apparent, as you are starting the application process over from scratch while making significant improvements. To make sure you understand where your application was weak/needed improvement, the director of admissions herself makes an effort to visit the school and sit down with each student 1 on 1 to let them know where they need to improve.
As far as options for prep schools go, there are quite a few prep schools around the country that have successful programs, you just have to research. The ones that seem to have the highest success rates are NMMI, MMI in Alabama, Greystone Prep in Texas, and NWP in California, the latter being the best in my (biased) opinion.

If they don't announce Falcon scholarships until later, should you already have applied to the prep schools? Or, is there still time to apply?

If you decide to go the prep school route a great place to start is with schools that send sponsored Falcon scholarships there. The schools have these relationships with the USAFA because they know they prepare the candidates well, ensure they understand the process of reapplying for noms (applications if needed) and uphold a certain standard of academics and physical prep. If you go as a 'free agent' (unsponsored) ensure you thoroughly research stats for that category. Sponsored candidate stats are extremely high and can skew the numbers. Also research if they provide college credit.

You will still have time. In fact, most of the Falcon Foundation students that went to NWP had no idea the school even existed until they received the scholarship. I believe the scholarship gives you a list of prep schools to choose from.
Also, if you know that you would like to attend a prep school, with a scholarship or not, you can apply in advance without the risk of losing scholarship eligibility. In other words, you could be already enrolled in a prep school as a "free agent" then receive the Falcon Foundation scholarship and use it towards the school as long as the prep school you are enrolled in is one of the official prep schools of the falcon foundation program.

I'm still slightly confused if these Falcon scholarships are more for academic reasons or for anyone who didn't get an appointment.

I agree with thee above. Lot's of mixed information.

I guess we will just wait and see.
