    1. Is joining the DEP program viewed as a positive or a negative? The local Navy recruiter told me that it would be viewed as a commitment to service

    2. Would I be better off taking AP Calculus or Calculus at the local junior college next year (senior year)?

    Thank You

    What is DEP?

Your best bet is to get an A in whatever Calc course you take.

    DEP- Delayed Entry Program.

You sign enlistment papers and go to MEPS (Military Entrance Processing Station). You have a boot camp ship out date that is up to one year after the day you sign the papers. The recruiter said that it would show that I was really dedicated to serving but I feel like it would be wrong to join with basically no intention of going (I plan on going to college).

If you are serious about going to college you should go and join NROTC and try again. That also shows committment as well as you are already working toward being an officer in the Navy or Marine Corps. Also, if worse comes to worse and you do not get an appointment next year, you are already on your way to a commission.

    MN14,

Just for clarification, I'm a junior right now and will be applying for USNA Class of 2015 and also for the NROTC scholarship. I was wondering about joining DEP during fall of my senior year.

No. There is nothing wrong with enlisting but I've yet to see that it's a good, let alone the best, way to gain entry into USNA.

USNA isn't looking for DEP. They are looking for motivated individuals who do well academically, athletically, and with leadership. You can do all that in h.s.
