    Hey guys,

On a lighter note. ...... I notice on the top of the SA Forums page the pics of the different student/cadets/midshipmen etc. in uniform.

What uniform is the left most pic? It looks to be a Navy blue/black version of the "choker" white. Is that something the USMMA has? Exclusive to the Navy? No longer used?

    Thanks, Just curious

Yep, USMMA band uniform. Sometimes seen at other occasions such as Presidential parades.

You won't see it in the active duty Navy.

I had to look at it pretty closely, but the covers do not have stars above the anchors, so....it is actually the USMMA (possibly ROTC) color guard wearing the same uniform, but they don't wear the red sash or the white belt across the shoulders.

The Naval Academy's version is 2nd from left.

The pictures are (from left to right) USMMA mids, CGA Cadets, AFA Cadets, USNA mids and West Point Cadets. You can tell the second from the left is CG because of the star over the anchor, AF and WP is self explanatory because their uniforms are so unique. The 2nd from the right is USNA because on those choker black uniforms you can see stripes denoting rank on them which USMMA doesn't have. I need a life :)

I could have sworn USNA had the star above the anchor, but I went and looked and I think you are correct.

So are USMMA uniforms similiar to USNA uniforms? What about if you are planning on receiving an Air Force comission?

If you are going to commission into the Air Force you will continue to wear the USMMA uniforms until graduation. You will wear Air Force Blues at graduation and will take the oath of office as an Air Force 2nd Lt. as part of the ceremony.

Oh alright. How much air force training will my DS receive during his four years at USMMA? Or will he have to go to AF OTS after graduation in order to get his commission in the AF? Also do you have to decide your fourth class year on what branch you want to be in? And one more final question, are the USMMA uniforms similar to the USNA uniforms? Thanks for your help!

The uniforms are similar to USNA but not identical. Most of the time he will be wearing khakis. I am not as familiar with the Air Force program as some of the other parents. The Air Force appears to have only recently "discovered" KP, but he will get his commission on graduation day and then go on to additional training.

I thought that he got his commission on graduation day, but I am just trying to figure out when they fit in his AF training that qualifies and prepares him for the commission. From what I know, most of their training revolves around maritime/naval service. Thanks for your help!

There is no real AF prep at the school besides taking the AFOQT or taking the Air Force Elective. Your son for just about his entire time he's at KP will study anything and everything Maritime related. His Commission in the AF will be direct commission. The AF recruiter on campus might give him some work to do in his senior year when he commits to a service branch but will not receive any training until then. KP is not an Air Force school so again Maritime classes will be taught, not AF.

    Air Force Dad

I'm an O-6 in the Air Force and my DS is a plebe candidate.

My DS hasn't decided his way ahead on commisioning and in fact was driven towards USMMA over other academies because of his options.

We looked into the opportunities for an AF commision from USMMA and prevelence/respect within the AF for Kings Point Grads. Everyone I spoke to who knew an active duty Air Force Office who was a USMMA grad had outstanding things to say about the officer and corresponding respect for the institution that prepared them.

I understand that your question was with regard to the particulars of coursework at USMMA for an AF commission, but a phone call to the school could answer that, the more important part to your point is the expectations for Air Force opportunities following Kings Point.

Feel free to send me a msg if youd like to talk offline.

Remember, USMMA is first and foremost a maritime academy; and the mission is to graduate engineers and mates.

It does hence the name of the institution located at Kings Point, NY - The United States Merchant Marine Academy. I think there is a place called the US Air Force Academy, one of my old bosses said he graduated there in 1966. I think it's in Colorado, I recall he showed me a picture of it or at least a really cool looking building he told me was their Chapel, I sort of remember there were mountains behind it. When I showed him a picture of the Chapel at my Alma Mater, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, he noticed right away the large body of water behind it and the sailboats in the Hague Basin, he sort of felt it all made sense since I went to school to look out the windows of big ships and make sure we didn't hit other big ships....:yllol:

USCGA cadets are the only ones with stars above the anchor. The officer candidates from USCG OCS have an "OC" above the anchor.

The Coast Guard Academy cadet second from the left is also the inverse...we don't hold swords in our left hand.
