Uniforms and Parents Weekend

Being Thanked

My DD had a problem with being thanked....."but I haven't even gone out to sea" ....

After Acceptance ceremony during Parents Weekend your student WILL BE sworn into the Navy Reserves as well as the Merchant Marine Reserves. Your DD or DS are now REPRESENTING every Service Man and Women across this planet.

It is MUCH easier to just show appreciation that try to explain that you are 'only' a student at the Academy. ****Remember that the general population only see the uniform.....they have NO IDEA that they are not in Active Duty Service.

My DD then became very proud to have someone recognize the uniform and she accepted the 'thanks' on behalf of one of her childhood friends that was KIA in Iraq in 2008 and all those in Active or Reserve Duty.

Our DS wore a school uniform up through 8th grade. Then he wore a 'different' uniform of t-shirt and jeans or cargo shorts:smile:.

During his plebe year he never complained about having to wear his uniform; he even remarked that (except for the shirt stays) he liked wearing it. He, too, got 'thanked for his service' frequently, and felt a little uncomfortable about it at first. After a while he would just respond to people that he was happy to accept their thanks on behalf of everyone in service.

I do wonder why a student at USMMA would want to take off his/her uniform asap, especially when wearing it gets such a positive reaction. I would think they'd feel a little pride.

As far as wearing/not wearing it off campus on Parents Weekend: when we were out and about on LI, our DS recognized several upperclassmen when we were in restaurants, etc., so it's a risk a plebe out of uniform could get recognized as well.

If you had to wear and maintain a uniform for around 15-18hrs a day you would want to be out of it as much as possible too.

Just think if your kids wore a uniform during school or you wear one for work, do you wear it when on your free time or do you pretty much immediately take it off after getting home for the day. Same reasons apply to midshipmen. Plus, they'll be wearing whites, good luck getting random NYC stains out of those.

You don't need to have the uniform on to feel pride in your school or service. I rarely wear my uniform beyond the confines of my house and work, granted rules prohibit me from doing so most of the time anyway (flight suit).

(The real reason is if you do something stupid there's always plausible deniability if you're in civvies and you don't have your name plastered to your chest with USMMA written all over it  )
