What is USAFA's policy on braces? Can you have them? Do you need to get them off before BCT? Can you have them on while you are attending?

Are you able to get braces on after reporting if your teeth are not straight?

Check out this thread from a few years ago.... http://www.serviceacademyforums.com/index.php?threads/braces.16416/

Looks like you will have to have them off to report or it remains a DQ. If you want them after indoc, it is best to check with the dentist at USAFA on how that can be done. Sounds like you can but has to be done with your own money and handled by an outside ortho. As for all medical and that includes dental, once at USAFA you should check with them before doing any medical treatments outside of their care. I also recommend if they tell you its okay to do something such as braces, that you get it marked in your medical record as its okay to ensure there is no confusion down the road.

My DD has a permanent retainer on her lower teeth. These are fine.

I'm not sure how these are viewed, but you may want to consider invisilines. They're more expensive, but you can just pop them in and out as needed.

I believe that there's an ortho at USAFA. Maybe a cadet on here can confirm?

Invisilines are just are good! I had braces on for two years and after having them removed, they gave me an invisiline to keep them in place. I won't lie, they are very gross to me but they do work.

There is at the base hospital, chances are you'd need a referral from the dental clinic in the cadet area, but I know people who have been over there for various procedures.

Funny!
Actually Rogers, you were given retainers. The invisilines are much less bulky & less gross since you change them out every 2 weeks. (I speak from experience ;))

Ohhh okay nevermind my post then lol and i got my changed too like monthly but they were gross. I hated taking them out to eat because of spit. Just gross xD

Speaking only from our experiences last year, braces have to come off before in-processing. That said, WebGuy posted photos and a blog last year about how all the Basics went to the dentist and had an ortho consultation if needed during BCT. I know some people were offered braces. I don't know about cost because my DS didn't need them.
Similar in concept, you have to finish all rounds of treatments and medication, etc. before in-processing, as well. This meant for our DS that he could not finish his Accutane (acne meds).
Your ALO should be able to guide you through such questions.
