USAFA Orientation

OK hard to believe how fast time flies. Our daughter will be a C1C next year, and Orientation seems like yesterday I was sitting in a blizzard on I-25 driving from Denver to Csprings to pick her up from the over-night. We live in the springs now, and I thought I would share some info on Lodging and Dinning.

The Academy will send buses to The Drury, and Academy hotels on Monday morning to pick you up and drop you off. They have a few more stops, and they should be on the page with info about orientation. The intersection the Academy Hotel and Drury are located is just outside the Main Academy Gate on Academy Blvd. It is convenient because Walmart, Famous Daves, McDonald’s, Denny’s and several other Shopping and dinning establishments are within walking distance.

Both hotels are older but in good condition. If you are looking for something cheaper there is a Days-Inn, and Super-8 right next to the Drury.

If you are coming as a family you may want to try the Homewood Suites or Residence Inn located just up the road from the Drury (not walking distance but only about 5 minutes to Drury by car). These Suites have living rooms and kitchens that will make your stay much more pleasant. Additionally if you plan on coming out over Labor Day for Parents weekend I would make reservations NOW, because they will be sold out fast. They were building a really nice Embassy Suites just outside the North Gate, but the construction has stopped there. I am sure by the graduation for 2014 it should be open though.

I will try and snap a few pictures over the next couple days so you can see what these places look like before hand. If you have any questions feel free to PM me.

AFA Offer of Appointment and Orientation

Anyone booked their dates / flights / hotels for the April Orientation yet??
Figured we had better do it ASAP as I know hotels book up fast and flight prices change.
We are booked for the 26th & 27th April grouping...staying at the Best Western. Anyone else going at that time frame.??

How do you find out about the orientation dates? My son just received an offer of appointment today to the USAFA. Is this orientation for the appointees and the parents?

How do you find out about the orientation dates? My son just received an offer of appointment today to the USAFA. Is this orientation for the appointees and the parents?

Yes, it's for both. The dates were listed for a bit on the online application, then they removed them. There was also a link to register earlier, but it's been "disconnected" too. They're now saying that it will all show up on your online app with all the info by Feb 1. You can use these dates for planning now - you should plan to arrive Sun at some point (at the latest - we're coming in early to visit other friends and ski), then the orientation will be all day Mon/Tue. We're flying home Tue night but many others are leaving Wed morning (less stressful to do it that way if you can afford to miss that much school).

Will the appointees stay at the hotel with parents or will they be shadowing at the Academy starting Sunday? Trying to decide about the hotel room.

Who pay for the Appointee's trip for orientation? Will the appointee stay at the hotel with us?

Appointees pay for their own transportation for orientation. They stay with you in your hotel on Sunday night but are at USAFA in a cadets room on Monday night.

Anybody new booked their flights / picked their Orientation dates & Hotel??

Hi all,

Just received a little brochure about orientation in the mail. I am sure they sent them out to everyone but I just live really close. It has a full schedule of events, what to bring, and travel instructions. For anyone who needed to leave early, there is an early bus for the Colorado Springs Airport departing at 2:30 Tuesday afternoon.

Later,

Brian

Hi - we're not home so we didn't get one yet. Does the early bus only go to the airport or back to the hotels as well? We'd need to leave for the Denver Airport about that time and we're trying to decide if we should drive on the base that day or take the buses. Thanks!

What were the dates for orientation in your brochure?

It only mentioned early buses to Colorado Springs Airport. They may have other options or go by the hotels on the way to the airport, but I don't think it mentioned anything about Denver Airport. The dates are correct as listed on these forums (April 12-13, 19-20, 26-27).

Later,

Brian
