My DS has taken the SAT 4 times now and he has scored 550 on critical reading part. Math is 650. Will he be a candidate for the prep school since he won't meet the 580 requirement. Will he even get a nomination with that score. He has all the other requirements, leadership, sports, volunteer work, jobs, GPA 4.37 all honors classes.

I'm no expert, but I got into NAPS with a 31 ACT score (97th percentile) and solid grades but no nomination. From the people I've talked to, most going to prep school have lower scores than that, but there's no "one size fits all" for any of the prep schools. If he does his best, there's nothing left but to wait and pray. Best of luck to your son.
