USAFAPS Questions

We have one recruited swimmer who goes to the Olympic Center almost daily for swim practice. He even gets to have a car for it.

I am a recruited athlete (Basketball), and I would love to get as much information as possible for Prep School Athletics. So please post links to any information you find! Thanks

Actually, although you are correct that when you go the P as a civilian, you must become a member of the Air Force Reserves, the stipend is not E-1 pay. E-1 earns about $1491 per month. I believe the stipend is set by Air Force regulations put in place when the P school was originally set up.

I am surprised you feel it should be explained better. All this information is clearly stated in the Prep School Catalog. In addition, in the Instructions to Cadet Candidate Appointees, which you were sent shortly after accepting your appointment to the P school, it clearly states that you are to become a member of the Air Force Reserves upon arrival, it clearly states what your stipend will be, and it clearly states that your meals are to be taken at the High Country Inn dining facility at no cost.

So I am confused about the fact that you say your meals are deducted from your stipend.

In addition, it clearly states that you will participate in unit and random drug testing throughout the year. You have to sign a document that says so. So if someone failed a drug test, I am not surprised they were discharged in that manner.

Okay, if you are a civilian and you come to the prep school, you are enlisted into the Air Force Reserves. Now, whenever you are on any assignment, you have orders. Preppies who were civilians have special orders, as allowed by Title 10, United States Code, that have special restrictions on pay, leave, and the likes. Because of this, although they are E-1's, the pay is still only the $990 or whatever it is they get. Prior enlisted, however, just get active orders to the prep school.

As far as meals go, it is just like enlisted airmen living in the dorms. You will get BAS, Basic Allowance for Sustenance, which was $347.44 on my check this month, and you have a meal deduction taken out from your check, which this month was $247.50. Granted the meal deduction is usually a TAD bit higher, but because we were on spring break, it was a bit lower.

Haha, I think LFry is still definitely talking about the 18-day USAFAPS BMT he's getting ready for.

Yep! I see the point they're trying to make though. That enlisted airmen have the longest bootcamp and should be recognized for it.

For sure for sure. I feel like one of my friends leaves for Lackland every other month, it's some crazy stuff.

I don't believe that the AFA Preparatory School qualifies. It is not a college and Cadet Candidates do not get college credit for their studies there. The P exists solely to prepare Cadet Candidates for success at the Air Force Academy. The scholarship covers your room and board and tuition. The monthly stipend is more much than enough to pay for the required laptop, books, materials, uniforms.

Not sure about federal grants, like stated above Prep is not a college so it would be up to the grant program. However, we do get Preppies who earned scholarships from local clubs or organizations in their hometown and still give that money to the Preppie. Those scholarships can be used to pay for initial costs and books throughout the year.

Do anyone know the USAFAPS In processing/ report Date for Class 2014

Which day in July is the inprocessing date? Asking for planning purpose. Haven't received an appointment or heard anything. Just curious.

Ours was July 18 for Direct Entry, 11 July for Prior Enlisted.

In-processing cost is around $430... can this be paid say via debt card? Also the next payment day, shows books for $900, football tickets for $165 and a jacket for $85 all "due on the same day," is that right, do you have to buy it all? Personally I don't like dropping $1150 in one day on anything unless I have too... Also what is SNOFEST?

Yes, all of those expenses are required.

You will attend all the football games so you will use the tickets. Even football players who don't need the tickets have to buy the tickets.

You are required to buy the textbooks sold at the Prep School, so you will be paying the full $900 for them.

The jacket is part of Husky Gear, which is yet another required purchase.

SNOFEST is a weekend event that all preppies are required to attend for at least one day. They bus the whole Prep School out to a mountain (this year it was Keystone) and allow everyone to ski/board/hang out at the lodges. After that, preppies are permitted to take a bus back to the dorms, or stay the rest of the weekend. There will be another fee for this that all preppies will be required to pay, and you will also have to find a way to pay for lodging fees and ski/board rentals.

If you have any more questions, let me know.
