USCGA 2020 appointments

Congrats to those getting notification of their appointments! Great news!

Parents of Appointees, there is a Facebook group for parents of appointees only. You can request to be added at https://www.facebook.com/groups/USCGA2020Parents/

This is a great way to network with other parents. Incidentally, the Parent's Associations at other service academies have similar parent's groups set up. Before long, the appointees will get notification of a similar closed Facebook group for them as well. It helps them to get to know their classmates ahead of R-Day.

oh geez...this Closed FB page is a tease! no appointment yet but I think I may know a mom already from another friend in our old town!!! (love good karma)

How did you guys know, if you did, that your application was going to the review board? Do they send out an email saying my application vis about to go to the board? And then if this is true, how long eas it from notification of review to offer of admissions? Sorry, I know this is a lot but thr waiting has been eating me up.

If you applied EA and confirmed it, and everything is in, then your package should be in the review process. My understanding is that EA notices can come as late as Christmas. I know the waiting stinks, but the other SA's send the bulk of their offers out in Feb/March. Keep the faith.

Son had no visibility as to when his app would be reviewed. He made sure very thing was in by the EA deadline...that was it. Call came out of the blue this week and his portal updated with the appointment letter. Hang in there as there are no doubt many more EA appointments to come.

DS didn't make the EA deadline and just completed his apps last week. He did sent out an email to his Admission officer just letting him know that his apps has been completed and his admission officer confirmed and told him that his application will be getting reviewed in the next few weeks. Now, not sure how long will it take to get notification, since he was told during his "Cadet for a Day" visit that Regular Decision notification will start on April 1st.

Does anyone know if the dodmerb needs to be complete in order to become accepted? My son just had his exam today?

Yes. I believe your son can receive a conditional appointment with the condition being that he passesthe physical. I am not an expert so someone please correct me if I am wrong. Our son was fortunate in that he had already been cleared for other academies before he even completed his Coast Guard application.

We got the call tonight! My daughter is in. Conditional on the physical which she finished today at the eye doctor. So proud!

Congrats to you guys! If you don't mine me asking, what were there "stats"? I just want to know for comparison.

Congrats on the new round of Appointments! For those of you still waiting, it's hard not to get into comparing stats. CGA Admissions takes a holistic approach looking at many different data points. Each year on this forum, you will see applicants who post their stats and you will compare theirs to yours and wonder how/why they got admitted/rejected and you didn't/did. It will drive you crazy if you let it.

Put your best application forward and know that you did all that you can do. Try not to compare yourself to other applications. On a broad level, if you want to look at the admission stats from last year, and you fall into that range someplace, you may "have a chance" Everyone is different and is looked at differently by the Board.

Congrats again to those of you who received Appointment offers. To those still waiting, hang in there, and ALWAYS have a Plan B and C.

We had heard that CGA uses the holistic approach meaning that the admissions team does not assign "points" for scores, achievements etc. Son is a well-rounded person with above average, but not spectacular ACTs, strong grades, 3 season athlete, team captain, band leadership and possesses a commitment to helping others. He is still waiting to here from 2 other SAs but USCGA seems to be a tremendous fit for him.

Best of luck to all.....

Does everyone that is accepted receive a phone call?

As far as we are aware, DS received no phone call (or email message). His portal was simply updated to state that a decision was available, and the link took him to a letter dated November 12 that offered him a full appointment.

Just a little confused with this and waivers. Can you receive a conditional while you have arranged for the original appointments or is a conditional appointment only available to someone in the process of getting a waiver?

There are two boards that meet: the admissions board and the DoDMERB medical board. Sometimes the admissions board meets before the DoDMERB physical is complete. If that's the case, then the admissions board can offer a conditional appointment pending the success of the physical.

Sometimes, though, a medical condition pops up. DoDMERB can report it as disqualifying, but the individual academies can grant waivers based on their own policies. Then the conditional appointment is offered pending a waiver. For example, nearsightedness is a disqualifying condition, but is usually waived if the correction is within certain parameters. Color blindness is disqualifying for Coast Guard, but may be waivered at West Point, if I recall correctly.

According to admissions on FB..Next round of EA appointments due out on Mon. Nov. 30th. Word is to check your accounts. May or may not receive phone call.
