Huge First Half Leads Bears Past MMA

NEW LONDON, CONN.--(11/22/10)--Freshman Kaitlin Ward had career-highs with 20 points and eight rebounds leading Coast Guard to a 62-45 win over Merchant Marine in a non-conference game between the two rivals.

Coast Guard (2-2) dominated play in the first half as the Bears held the Mariners to just a pair of field goals (2 for 28) in the first 19 minutes of the game and led 34-7 before the Mariners made a pair of buckets in the final minute of the opening stanza and trailed 35-11 at halftime.

Merchant Marine shot just 12.9 percent (4 of 31) from the floor in the first half before shooting 40.6 percent in the second half (13-32) and making four of eight from 3-point range in the final 20 minutes.

Sophomore Karli Collins and freshman Alexa Hunko each had 11 points in the win for Coast Guard. Senior Allison Majcher had career-highs with 13 rebounds, six assists and five blocks while Hunko added a career-high nine rebounds as Coast Guard outrebounded the Mariners 56-39.

Coast Guard scored 12 straight points for a 12-1 lead with 12:48 left in the first half with Ward accounting for seven of those 12 points for the Bears.

Senior Rebecca Grimes led the Mariners (0-2) with 14 points and seven rebounds while juniors Alicen Heinrich and Olivia Norris each added eight points in the loss.

The Bears shot 32.8 percent from the field (19-58) while making two of six from 3-point range.
