I agree with matty.
I thought that the Coast Guard had quotas to fill per state as well.
That's nice then, especially for people coming from populous states.

First off, congratulations on your appointments!!! I can't wait to see you all at the Academy in August, should you choose to attend. And you should come to CGA...it's fantastic...but hey, I'm a little partial :biggrin:.
As a 2017er, Swab Summer is still fresh in my mind. If you guys have any questions as to what to pack, what to expect, etc...please feel free to message me; I'd be happy to help! My best advice? Enjoy the next few weeks with you family and friends, have a great time and make some awesome memories. Looking forward to seeing you all in the fall! Good Luck!! :smile:

There is also a message list for parents run by the Parents Association where questions can be asked and official answers obtained from the Academy. Information obtained from the list should not be shared with your cadet.

Paul Duddy, the parent's favorite, travels to the Academy almost daily, photographs what is happening, and posts on these two pages. Pictures from Swab Summer kept us parents sane during the "no letter again today because they are too busy" phase. Other parents post as well, so parents who can't get to the Academy easily or often still have the chance to see what their kid is up to. :thumb:

Climb in, fasten your seatbelt, and get ready for the rollercoaster ride. My son is in Alyswimmer's class. Swab summer and first academic year over. Alyswimmer, would you share with everyone what your summer assignments are, just to peak their curiosity?
 
Sure! Right now, I'm at Station Coos Bay in Oregon. It's a small boat station situated just behind the jetties on the Pacific Ocean, a little north of the California border. I've never been to the Pacific Northwest before, so it's exciting! It's a busy station, and much of our time is spend getting comms qualified (qualified to work the radios/phones/etc) and boat crew member qualified. They have a 29', a 47', and a 52' boat here, and our main focus will be on the 29' for the next few weeks. Later on, we will be getting pepper sprayed as part of a boarding team member qualification...:eek:
The people here are fantastic...really helpful, knowledgeable, and willing to take time out of their day to help us learn! This station sees a lot of search and rescue, and I'm hoping we get to experience some of that soon. Many of the people here are surfmen, and are incredible. They do search and rescue for a living, and are some of the most humble people you will ever meet. Also, we train with the HH65 Dolphins from a nearby air station, which is a really neat experience, especially for me because I'm hoping for flight school after graduation! It's really busy here, but they still give us time to explore the area and interact with the crew. Honestly, fourth class year is tough. But the summer is well worth the wait, and serves as a great reminder as to why we joined the Coast Guard in the first place.
In four weeks, I leave for the Cutter Eagle, which we are going to sail from Miami to Canada, NY, and Massachusetts. I'm looking forward to the adventure! After that, it's three weeks of leave at home before returning in August to CGA. It's shaping up to be a great summer, filled with amazing memories and experiences and people. I'm not going to lie, Swab Summer and 4/c year can be challenging, but it's important to keep your eye on the prize. If I had to do it over again, I'd do it in a heartbeat!

Congratulations Danielle!
My DS is still waiting. He is planning to keep applying to the CGA next
year after a year at the University, however he is still physically training
in case he gets a last minute appointment! :smile:

Not sure how this works but I've had an appointment since December! I am an LOA out of Texas.
