Could someone please provide more detailed information about this program, i.e., would an EA applicant not otherwise receiving an appointment to the Class of 2015 automatically be considered for the program or was there a "special application"?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Scholars Program

From what I know, no extra application exists for the Scholars Program. If your initial U.S. Coast Guard Academy application is not selected for an appointment, you are automatically considered for the Scholars Program.

Thanks for the quck reply. After the info posted today, anxiety's getting the better of us!

I know what you mean!!! Same here! And as a result, I spend most of my free time on this site now! :thumb: But I have to admit, this site and the people that post on it have been a great help in answering many questions of mine.

I agree. We were doing alright until the past few days. We're not stalking the PO but have been keeping a close eye on the post here. Thanks again for your reply and best of luck!

The "official" info about CGAS:

ALCOAST 403/08 COMDTNOTE 1531 said:
THE CGA SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM IS AN ORIENTATION AND PREPARATORY
PROGRAM. IT IS TARGETED TO CANDIDATES WHO SEEK TO BECOME CADETS AND
OFFICERS, BUT NEED ADDITIONAL ACADEMIC DEVELOPMENT IN ORDER TO
SUCCEED AT THE ACADEMY. THE CGA SCHOLARSHIP ALSO ASSISTS IN
BROADENING ACCESS TO AND DIVERSIFYING THE ACADEMY CORPS OF CADETS.
ADMISSION TO THE PROGRAM IS SELECTIVE. CGA SCHOLARS ARE CHOSEN FROM
THE ACADEMY APPLICANT POOL BASED ON THEIR PREPARATION, LEADERSHIP
POTENTIAL, MOTIVATION, CAPACITY TO CONTRIBUTE, AND THE NEEDS OF THE
SERVICE. APPROXIMATELY 50-60 STUDENTS MAY BE ADMITTED TO THE CGA
SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM EACH YEAR. ABOUT 85 PERCENT OF SCHOLARSHIP
RECIPIENTS SUBSEQUENTLY EARN APPOINTMENTS AND ENROLL AT THE ACADEMY
AS FOURTH-CLASS CADETS AFTER COMPLETING THE TEN MONTH COURSE OF
ACADEMIC, PHYSICAL, AND MILITARY INSTRUCTION AT EITHER NEW MEXICO
MILITARY INSTITUTE IN ROSWELL, NM, OR MARION MILITARY INSTITUTE IN
MARION, AL. SCHOLARS ARE ENLISTED AT THE RANK OF E-2 (OR CURRENT
ENLISTED PAY-GRADE IF HIGHER), EARN COLLEGE CREDIT, AND IMPROVE
THEIR READINESS TO COMPETE FOR APPOINTMENT TO THE ACADEMY. THE
COAST GUARD PAYS FOR OFFICIAL TRAVEL AND TUITION. STUDENTS PAY
THEIR OWN ROOM AND BOARD USING ALLOWANCES AND BENEFITS, WHICH ARE
ADEQUATE TO COVER THE COSTS.

CGA Scholars Handbook - 2010

Actually, there IS a separate application, but you fill it out AFTER you have been selected for the CGAS program.

If your initial U.S. Coast Guard Academy application is not selected for an appointment, you are automatically considered for the Scholars Program.

Not all "deferred" or "rejected" applications are automatically considered for CGAS.

Oh, I'm wrong! Sorry for misinforming you! Thank you for the correction, Luigi!

If your initial U.S. Coast Guard Academy application is not selected for an appointment, you are automatically considered for the Scholars Program.

The Cadet Candidate Evaluation Board makes two recommendations for every application they review...the first is for direct appointment to the Academy and the second is for the CGAS Program. So officially every applicant to the Academy is also being considered for CGAS, but the CGAS Selection Board (acting on the recommendation of the CCEB) will actually review those records again and tender appointments to the CGAS Program.

If anyone has anymore questions about CGAS just shoot me a message. I'm currently a scholar at NMMI and I feel it's working out very well for me and it's doing a great job at preparing us for the Academy.

CGAS

Are there any students there who came on their own with hopes to apply to the academy again. Do you think it would be a benefit to do that if you don't get accepted the first time and don't get offered a scholarship?

Every year there are "self preps" and I would imagine going to NMMI or MMI would be a huge sign of interest and dedication towards getting an appointment. That said, many go the civilian route (community college, state U, etc) and get in just fine. So...do well wherever you go and improve your application where you can.

But it's too early to think about that, right? Still hope for everyone in RA round. Fingers crossed for y'all. :thumb:

While my DD was at MMI a couple of years ago on the CGAS program, there were several MMI cadets there as "self-prepsters" for several of the service academies, including a few for the Coast Guard Academy. I believe several of them got in. Here is a link to MMI's history of appointments - CGAS are the "sponsored appointments". http://www.marionmilitary.edu/about-mmi/sap assessment.da NMMI may have similar statistics on their site.

Are there any in your class who came from enlisted rather than from high school?

Yes. There are two guys in preps school who served about four years enlisted and then are now in the scholars program
