USMA Catalog

I simply look at it as a guide to narrow down the list of majors I'm interested in.

At the R-day orientation by the Dean for my DD, he put up a slide which showed the courses for plebes. "Electives," he said "are in red." There was not a drop of red on that slide:wink:.

But do we ever actually pick courses to take?

You will pick your major Yearling year which will determine most of your classes. While this will automatically slot you into some required courses, most majors have requirements like "take 2 of these 10 courses" which will also give you a choice. You are also free to take any elective you want as long as you can fit it into your schedule in addition to your requirements. Also, beginning Yearling year, you are able to take "Lifetime Sports" (taking it once is required but you may take as many as possible) in which you pick a gym class such as basketball, snowboarding, scuba, weight lifting, etc.
