Hi all, I've been lurking and learning for months now. Thanks to all that have posted questions and the many who have taken the time to answer.

The Hotel Thayer has posted that USMA Class of 2021 R-Day is July 3, 2017 and Acceptance Day is August 19, 2017: http://www.thethayerhotel.com/USMA-Class-of-2021

I know, I know, our kids haven't even gotten offers yet. However, now is the time to start looking at hotels. The nearby ones go quickly!

On the USNA site their calendars have every thing for the next few years...maybe USMA does that also?
But yes that's gonna be nuts. And BTW, yes I have already booked just in case...I-day and PPW

Someone has posted the date for R-Day 2017 before. So I looked into it several weeks ago.

Just so you know, Hotel Thayer requires a 2 day stay and full payment, no refund.

What is acceptance day and how does it differ from R Day?

My understanding is R Day is Reception Day when the new candidate plebes begin their Beast Barracks (summer training and indoctrination). Acceptance Day is when Beat Barracks is over and they are accepted in the Corps of Cadets.

"Beating" is not allowed. That is a form of hazing as well as assault and battery. And subject to incarceration.
I know what you mean, take it easy, I was just busting your !@#@#

R-Day is a very brief day. In the morning, your Cadet Candidate waits in line with his/her entourage. Years past, in order to prevent a full frontal assault they stager cadets by odd or even numbers or alphabetical. You gather in Ike Hall, listen to a 10 min briefing and then........your good bye and the sobbing begins. And thats it. The next time you spot your Cadet Candidate will be in review march followed by the very symbolic slamming of the heavy oak door at Washington Hall.

A-Day and PPW are the times you want to visit WP. The Cadets finish March Back, (painfully slow) and a bbq for the Cadets only. Later in the week families get a chance to visit with Cadets over the weekend and take them back with them to where ever you're staying. Most Cadets want to get away from WP and the spying eyes of upper class Cadets to decompress and sleep. They will know their limits. No further than 75 miles, must be back every night by a certain time, no alcohol. PPW is very cool time to visit and you'll get a chance to peek in their dorms meet teachers and mentors. There will be formal dinner in Washington Hall and you'll be able to keep your wine stemware that has their class crest etched.

Thayer is nice because its there and close. But a bit pricey

You said the cadets have to report back "every night". Is A-Day more than just one day but rather a weekend?

We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express when we picked our son up from SLE. Was very clean and good breakfast. Within 10 minutes of West Point.

We have a larger family than most hotel rooms sleep comfortably. We didn't have all the kids with us when we picked him up so not sure what we will do if he is accepted. Spring Hill Suites is the current favorite and there is a new one in Fishkill, NY opening up in December of 2016.

West point motel just outside thayer gate is very good

Our DS is a plebe and we've made the journey from So Cal 3 times (R-Day, A-Day and Parent Weekend in October). We stayed in Fishkill at the HI Express. Very nice. It's about 30 min away, which is a drag taking DS to and fro. DS liked the distance away from the Academy. The Red Diner and Cracker Barrel are 50 yards from the hotel and a favorite for our DS. also across the main drag is a walmart. After A Day got a ton of school supplies and Keurig. At PW got additional comfort items. Spoiling ourselves staying at Thayer for the the upcoming PPW in March. book early

Try airbnb though those may also be gone.

Also part of Acceptence Day is the parade where the plebes march out separately onto The Plain, followed by the Corp. The Corp does an open ranks, the new plebes march into the Corp marking their acceptence.

I just looked at airbnb. There are some units left if you want to go that route.
I also know parents who purchased campers and left them near West Point for four years.

We have an rv that just sits in a storage unit here in Florida. Do you have details on where they camp and if it's rv friendly UHBlackhawk?

All booked up for those dates. Any other hotels recommended???
Little secret. There is an IHG Army hotel right on campus, by the cemetery. It looks lousy from the outside, but we have stayed there twice and it is quite OK on the inside, and the best location of any other place, even better location than the Thayer. We are a little picky, and we are 100%good with it. There is another one right outside the gate too, which is actually where you check in. I would call there soon though, as it books early for big weekends.

As a 2020 Plebe, I can say R-day is tough, but everyone will survive it, and the seven weeks thereafter. A-day is awesome. So cool to hand with your Cadet, looking so cool in that white over grey uniform.

We have been to WP for several game weekends, and have loved every visit. We feel like veterans now. Lol.

Lots of decent towns around WP, with good hotels. There is a waterfront area in Newburgh with several really good and cool places to eat. Great pizza place, BBQ, and others. Good places to take your Cadet on A-day.
