Today I was told by a USNA admissions officer that the engineering departments at USAFA and USNA run circles around USMA's. Is there any truth to that or was she just trying to sell her school?

I'm pretty sure it's safe to say that the USNA admissions officer was a little biased when he or she said that today.

According to U.S. News and World Report's college rankings USMA is tied for #3 while USNA and USAFA are tied for #5.

Remember that admissions officers will occasionally offer you a load of crap. One part of their job is to RECRUIT outstanding candidates to attend their respective academy-- when they down play how tough Beast is or tell you that you can definitely attend an academy and then go to medical school immediately afterwards (which only about 2% of every graduating class is allowed to do) you need to be able to see through the spin.

Years of rankings speak for themselves. USMA has dominated the engineering rankings for all SAs over the last decade.

USMA had the first department of engineering in the nation

2010-2011 Civil Engineering Program Top 9: USMA #2, USNA and USAFA not on the list.

2010-2011 Mechanical Engineering Program Top 10: USMA #2, USNA #7 and USAFA #10.

2010-2011 Electrical Engineering Program Top 10: USMA #3, USNA #5 and USAFA #8.

I rest my case. USNA has been playing academic catch-up for years now. West Point is also 5th all time for Rhodes Scholars, behind Princeton, Harvard, Yale, and Dartmouth. But hey, at least Navy has a good football team, right?

You can go to the best school, or you can go to USNA. You can't go to both :thumb:

We visit USNA often as it's nearby. I often see cars parked illegally. One time I saw a Jeep with emergency lights on, parked at a marked No Parking area just outside of their Barracks for about 20-30 min. Then a couple students came out and drove it away. I didn't see any kind of emergency except the parked spot was closer to the dorm. I don't know how discipline is like in USNA, but I think this kind of stuff is not often seen at West Point.

Sometimes I think about why West Point has a little bit lower average SAT's than USNA, but ranks higher than USNA in most ratings. The difference in discipline might make a difference.

I think one Jeep you saw parked one time for reasons you can't ascertain isn't germane to the discussion of engineering programs.

    Sometimes, Iwheel, less is more.

I figured I should throw that little tidbit in the crap pile along with some other obviously false information I was given. I was just asking because I've heard stuff of that nature (more about USAFA than USNA) before.
