Hi I am new to forum. I have a question that I was hoping some of you could answer. A cadet in his last year has a duty related injury in a required combative defense class and needs surgery. It will take a full year to recover from the surgery before he is healed enough and able to take the required combative defense class for graduation again. His graduation was to be in May.

Is there a waiver process and how does that process work? Will the cadet be able to graduate on time if the waiver is granted? who grants this waiver? How difficult is it to get a waiver? will he have to come back to USMA and repeat the class even if the waiver is granted? Does the waiver from have a DD #?

I can't imagine that USMA would keep a cadet in a holding pattern for a year for one class?

thank you in advance for your help in answering.

It will be at the discretion of the Dean and Commandant, and of course, the Superintendent. USMA will sometimes keep a cadet for a year, and sometimes they will not. It depends on what requirements the cadet still needs to complete and the cadet's individual situation.

As for the form, I can't say. It's like a memorandum and not a DD or DA Form. There may be an associated USMA form.

Better to be in a holding pattern as a Cadet then as an Officer. Clock starts at Graduation. If he is injured enough to not be able to complete a class, he might not be able to complete the mandatory initial officer training. 1st LT comes pretty quickly.

If the Cadet is in good standing otherwise, I am sure the leadership will do whats best for him and the Army.
