Does anyone know a fairly accurate $ amount that the USMA 4 year "scholarship" is worth?

My son's high school asks for a record of the $ amount of all scholarships awarded to any student - whether the scholarships are accepted or declined. It is my understanding that he should report his appointments to both USNA and USMA for this, but I am having a hard time finding a figure.

Ball park figure is between 250K and 350K don't qoute me on this though, wait for someone who has factual info to report. My suggestion: Call admissions.

Admissions should be able to help you with this and give an figure.

My son's guidance office actually gets the information directly from the source. They have a form that is sent and filled out by the group giving the scholarship. It lists the amount, whether or not it's renewable and also asks whether or not the group wishes to be there to award to scholarship.

My guidance office requested this information and USMA sent them t he following:

"Upon accepting his offer to The United States Military Academy at West Point, Andrew accepted a fully-funded scholarship that includes all tuition, room, board, books, uniforms, medical and dental care, training costs and pay, and is valued at over $400,000."

This came directly from admissions so I would assume it's fairly accurate.

You should contact your RC for the most up to date figure.
All I can tell you is that last year, our RC told us a figure of $202,000. I think what is confusing is that you hear figures thrown out that are in the $350,000- $400,000 range. What he (RC) told us is that that larger figure includes the military training costs, but the communications people don't want to use that higher figure anymore. They said that the current value of the education was worth $202,000. That was last year. This year's current value of education figure, with inflation, may very well be around $350,000. But, ask your RC what West Point wants to be used. :thumb:

The amount provided by USAFA is $414,000. You can probably round down to $400K and be pretty close (USAFA has to pay for the wall to wall plush carpeting, golf course, etc.!)

DS received an email response from Maj. Tolman (South East RC) who said he should use: $72K x 4 years = $288,000.

This is in line with what buff81 was told last year, and also what is mentioned in the West Point Parents Facebook discussion (Thank you Grannie for the link!):
"The value placed on the "scholarship" is approximately $202, 000.
The $380,000 is a dollar value placed on all costs that go into their WP experience. That number is approximate too. We prefer to use the scholarship value for presentations."

So much of the WP experience cannot accurately be expressed in $ amounts. My son will spend a semester abroad in Europe... someone who doesn't do that might have a different dollar amount, but that cadet might participate in other events that have different $ value. Does a cadet participate in a corps squad sports team? What travel expenses are associated with that? What about training trips? Each cadet chooses different summer training, each with different costs associated. There is really no way to tell in advance what the true monetary value of the USMA education is. Because of this, the lower number (while not as much "WOW") is probably a better one to use...just my opinion...which, incidently, combined w/ $5 will get you a fancy latte.

What? Have latte prices gone down? LOL. I had heard/read the $414,000 figure for USAFA somewhere also, but I cannot remember where.

Ditto that: my wife kindly advised me this evening the $414,000 figure came from the letter advising son of his appointment. It does not say what that figure includes or how it was calculated; it just says the offer is worth that amount. I would presume, maybe incorrectly, that USMA would be very comparable.

In the past, some have said the USMA education has a higher $ value as our cadets blow up more stuff and shoot more stuff than the other academy cadets during summer training exercises. I have no idea if this is true; just what I've heard.

I can't say if that's true or not but you just brought back some fun memories from "the greatest summer of my life" blowing up stuff with mortars, field artillery, tanks, hand grenades, etc. Ah, those were the days!

We were at West Point earlier this month for my son's overnight visit. One of the parents in the group asked this question. The officer speaking to us told us the value of the education alone was $205,000. Considering the room/board, training and other opportunities, the $400k range sounds comparable.

I was told today by my regional director that $300,000 is a good estimate to tell your school.
