LT Frank Toner, USN a 2006 graduate of Kings Point was killed in Afghanistan. I believe he is the second graduate of KP to have been killed in action during the current wars. Army Lt Aaron Seesan, '03 is the only other graduate I know of. My prayers go out to Frank's family, friends, and all those who loved him.

Below is the most current information I have:

It is with great sadness that I must inform you that United States Navy LT
Frank Toner; class of 2006 lost his life while serving his country in
Afghanistan. Frank was originally from Thousand Oaks, CA and is survived by
his wife Brook. LT Toner was a Navy Seabee who was stationed with the Army
in Northern Afghanistan. Frank was a four-year letter winner in football.
He was a linebacker and fullback.

The following details were provided by a fellow officer who was at the
scene: Frank and a group of other Navy and Army personnel were out running.
An insurgent who posed as an Afghan soldier positioned himself as a sniper
and fired at the joggers as they ran by. Another officer was killed, one
wounded (he will be ok) and another shaken up. LT was killed while trying
to get to the shooter. His actions saved the lives of others and the
officer reporting said he was "a hero."

Mindy, I will send a PM with information for you.

For others I have reposted this from Facebook

Hello Everyone,

We are doing a story tonight at 6:30 PM PST on Frankie. It will air on KTLA Channel 5 for those of you in the Los Angeles area.
For everyone else, I will try to get the story posted on our website; www.ktla.com tonight so you can watch it.
Frankie was such a great kid, and hopefully our story will help share Frankie's story with the world. Once again, my thoughts and prayers go out to all Frankie's family

and another note posted on the same

All,

My brother was stationed with Lt. Toner in Afghanistan. This is his account of the recent tragedy and I thought many of you would like to know what happened.

Frank Toner, a 06 grad and one other female navy LT were shot and killed by an ANA soldier who was also apparently an insurgent. Frank and I lived in the same hut and he worked at the desk next to mine. There were two others, a LTjg friend of mine and a CDR who were also involved. The CDR was wounded and will be okay, and the jg will be okay, just shaken up.
We were a running group and I was running well ahead of them this time.
The shooting happened behind me after I ran past, maybe 4 or 5 minutes after I was at the site. Everyone here is real shook up right now.
About a dozen of the Navy garrison escorted the remains back to Bagram and had a ceremony for them.

There are a lot of people on the way here to my camp for the service. The one the Germans gave yesterday morning prior to loading them on the aircraft was very nice. The had what seemed to be almost all the base lining the road for probably a mile, all holding torches and saluting, while the caskets were driven past with the Navy marching behind. Bagram was a little overwhelming, there are like 20K people there.

Everyone here liked him, he never spoke bad about anyone, and LT Choe, the other victim was the same, a good person. She was doing a lot with the MWR program here. Anyway, tell the school Frank went down trying to get to the shooter. He was a hero and everyone here is still trying to accept what happened. His actions probably saved my friend's life. He was the last runner in our group, also wearing his armor, and it slowed him down as the stuff
weighs so much, so he was in the rear. The news sources are getting a lot of details wrong, but as the investigation is going on, I don't want to say or speculate too much. Just the other day we joked about building something here with the KPS hidden in it.

Fellow Football Alums & Friends,

Before I interviewed for the Head Coaching position in May of 2005, I was
able to obtain several game tapes of the 2004 KP football team. KP's
tailback was a good player and it was easy to see his talent. What caught
my eye was the fullback who was blocking for him. He was relentless and
tough. Specifically, I remember watching the KP-Union game and was
impressed with the fullback's 22 yard TD run. The fullback was Frank Toner.

I did not have the opportunity to coach Frank as he had exhausted all of his
eligibility before I returned. I did have several conversations with him as
he was a visitor at practice on several occasions. I know I would have
loved to have had him on the team as you could tell just by talking with him
that he was a person of great character, intensity and he loved the game of
football. Frank was not the type to sit around and do nothing, so his last
year he played lacrosse. He never played the game but his competitive
spirit and toughness were traits that Head Lacrosse Coach Tom Gill wanted on
his team.

A fellow Brother who wore the Blue and Gray of KP made the ultimate
sacrifice serving his country. Frank's teammates who knew him must reach
out to his wife and family and provide support. For those interested,
contact me and I will provide further details as I get them. On behalf of
all Kings Point Football Players, our thoughts and prayers go out to Frank's
wife, parents and family.

Respectfully,

Michael G. Toop '77
Head Football Coach

I've been in touch with the Chaplain at KP and he will tell me when services are scheduled etc. I'll make sure to let everyone here know.
