I read that USMMA lets you choose which branch you would like to serve. But i keep reading and i keep seeing reserve. Can a grad commision active duty into the Navy? Is this normal?

Also, I read that you graduate with a 3rd mate license, Does this mean if you commision in the Navy active duty and want to be a SWO, are you on the fast track to a SWO qual?

    Yes, and yes.

The main reason you keep reading about the reserve is that it is the "default" pathway taken by graduates. If you would like to go SWO in the Navy it would be very easy to do so upon graduation.

As to the SWO qual I have heard rumors that graduates are approximately 40% complete with their qualifications; however, I have never been able to find any official directive on this matter. Although it may not be official you will be way ahead of your peers when it comes to your quals simply due to your experience on the bridge of a ship that many of the other junior SWO's will not have. You would still have many other "hoops" to go through to get your qualification, but you would be set up well as a graduate of KP.
