The Citadel names three finalists for provost; Hines to retire from position
Dr. Sam Hines has helped lead The Citadel to national prominence during his tenure

CHARLESTON, S.C. −Three finalists are under consideration for the position of provost and dean of The Citadel. The provost is a vice presidential position responsible for all matters pertaining to the academic functions of the college and is the second-ranking official at The Citadel. As the college’s chief academic officer, the provost provides leadership in all academic areas, including curriculum and instruction, research and scholarly activity, accreditation, admissions and financial aid, and academic support services.

The new provost will replace Brig. Gen. Samuel M. Hines, Jr., Ph.D., who joined The Citadel as provost and dean of the college in 2007 and will be retiring from that position at the end of the academic year. He will continue at the college as a professor of political science and leadership studies.

“Dr. Sam Hines has helped lead The Citadel to national prominence during his tenure as provost and dean of [IMG]the college,” said Citadel President Lt. Gen. John W. Rosa. “We are pleased he will return to the faculty and continue educating and developing principled leaders for all walks of life.”

Hines’ contributions to higher education have spanned a 45-year career. Prior to assuming the provost position at The Citadel, he was a professor and administrator for the College of Charleston for 34 years where he served in numerous positions including founding dean of both the School of Humanities and Social Sciences and the School of Languages, Cultures and World Affairs; vice president for Departmental Affairs; and associate provost.

Three finalists are under consideration for the position—Edward Ajhar, Ph.D., Constance Ledoux Book, Ph.D., and Shashi Kumar, Ph.D.

Ajhar has served as chair of the Department of Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Computer Science as well as the interim dean of the School of Science and Technology, and Engineering Management at St. Thomas University in Miami Gardens, Florida. During his time in those roles, he helped increase the school’s enrollment, grow the number of yearly grant submissions and boost the amount of active faculty researchers on campus. He is currently an associate professor of physics there. Additionally, Ajhar has been a program director at the National Science Foundation in the Division of Astronomical Sciences in Arlington, Virginia. In that role he led his team to exceed benchmarks for proposal reviews. Ajhar holds a bachelor’s degree and a Ph.D. in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a Master of Music in conducting from the University of Arizona.

Book is currently the associate provost of academic affairs at Elon University and first entered the university as a faculty member more than 20 years ago. There she provides leadership for 12 areas of the university including the undergraduate and graduate curriculum, general and experiential education, faculty and staff leadership and professional development, and strategic integration of a residential campus. Her portfolio of responsibilities touches more than 6,000 students and 400 faculty members. Book has been elected chair of key standing committees such as promotion and tenure, research and development, and long range planning. She holds a bachelor’s degree of journalism from Louisiana State University, a master’s degree in education from Northwestern State University, and a Ph.D. in journalism from the University of Georgia.

Kumar currently serves as the chief academic officer and senior executive service officer for the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York. There he directs a staff of 150 in transforming academic programs and providing leadership in strategic alignment, rebranding and process innovations. Kumar has also served the academy as interim superintendent for several years and is the founding dean of the Marine Maritime Academy Loeb-Sullivan School of International Business and Logistics in Castine, Maine. Also, he was a merchant marine officer and licensed master mariner for 12 years. Kumar earned a bachelor’s degree from T.S. Rajendra, an Indian maritime academy, a Master’s of Science from Maine Maritime Academy and a Ph.D. from the University of Wales.

The finalists for the position have been invited to campus for interviews after which Rosa will make a recommendation to the college's Board of Visitors. The position of provost reports directly to Rosa. The Citadel is expected to announce the new provost in the spring.

Can't say I blame him for looking for new challenges. I hope he is selected, but decides to stay at KP.

One has to wonder what is really going on at Kings Point. Col. Kennedy applied for the Commandants position at The Citadel in 2014.
