USMMA's Accreditation "May Be In Jeopardy"

Admiral Greene's tenure was a plateau on a much longer downward arc for KP

Sighhh...indeed... I'm glad I got out when I did.

When he stepped out of his house that night and spoke to our class it was hard to forget. In that moment I think we all aspired to have to swag that he did.

Part of an elaborate plot to slowly dismantle the school and weaken or abolish the jones act? Have to look at what companies are lobbying or colluding with decision makers in order to rule out such nonsense.

I've been floating in and out of this string since my DS has really shown an increased interest in KP and a career in Marine Logistics and Security. He's at MMI right now and self-prepping for KP, USNA and CGA. I must admit what I'm reading concerns me a bit on many levels (safety, integrity, quality, etc.) and to someone like me that hasn't attended a SA or served in a gov't position, I'm struggling to put all this in perspective and extrapolate out to future outcomes and their likelihood. Any other strings out there that can summarily shed light on this and if not, would someone please do so? We'd be grateful...thanks.

ForGod&Country, do not let the comments here have to much influence on your views. You need to keep in mind this forum only has a handful of regulars. You have probably already noticed that some view this forum as a lonely hearts club, reminiscing about the good ole’ days and lamenting how things will never be as good as when they were there. If you truly have an interest you need to visit the academy and talk to the current midshipmen yourself. It will give you a whole different perspective.

What are the pros and cons of the Jones Act, in the opinion of people on this thread?

I agree with you that everybody needs to go and see the academies that they might be interested in...with that being said, the accreditation issue is a concern and the stand down of sea year is also very important especially when the accreditation board report said that sea year is good/integral (not a quote) to the overall education and academy experience. My DS has been on 2 different commercial ships and learned a ton...went on a state maritime training ship and did not learn much if anything...is now on a ROS ship that is tied to a dock that is not operating and the crew goes home at night and is not learning what he is supposed to.

If the academy does not get off the accreditation warning status and fails it next time, what does that do to/for the Mids...the incoming and current...my guess is, noting good/positive. I know that when my daughter was looking at pharmacy school, one was working on accreditation and the other already was....received a full ride from the non-accredited we decided to go accredited route for better future employment opportunities.

My DS truly likes the academy...but not the current administration or their decisions...it is having multiple negative impacts on his life and that of his friends including the high probability of 2/3 of the deckie mids not being able to graduate on time for 2018 and lingering to 2019....these are the words of the SUPE stated to the Mids at a recent briefing with the regiment.

Truly sad.

More problems uncovered. Everything on HOLD now. This is not good.

WASHINGTON — Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx has concluded that sexual harassment and assault and other misconduct at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy are so serious the school needs to hire a team of outside experts to address the campus culture, officials said this week.

“Secretary Foxx issued a halt to the Sea Year program for Midshipmen at the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) after incidents of bullying, coercion, sexual harassment and assault continued despite consistent efforts by the Department of Transportation, the Maritime Administration, and the [school] to address these issues. While the Sea Year program has partially resumed, the more we dug into the problem, the more evident it became that the inappropriate behaviors we are trying to stem at sea cannot be addressed without addressing the campus culture. "

Foxx's announcement means that the four-year academy's training year at sea for midshipmen on commercial ships, a marquee program the Obama administration canceled this summer amid concerns about sexual misconduct, will be on hold indefinitely — and some students may not graduate on time.

Does this mean that the days of visiting federal officials will no longer be able to through all nite parties with the boys in the regiment?

I'm not sure why the administration even lets the mids go to sea any way. There is something much more DANGEROUS than any kind of harassment. It's called DEATH! Isn't the Maritime Industry one of the most dangerous jobs in the world? Maersk Alabama, Deep Water Horizon, El Faro, and CCNI Arauco to name a few.

Sarcasm intended!

Luv2fly.
