My son received an invitation to attend USNA candidate weekend this weekend. Is that a good indication that he will receive an apppointment if he gets a nomination? He wa also informed that he was sports coded. Can someone explain what that means?

Being invited to a CVW is a good sign as only highly qualified applicants typically are offered these spots. It is not, of course, a guarantee.

Indeed, understand that these CVW are not information sessions in their essence (altho they provide MUCH info to candidates and parents/guardians). They are recruiting and "matching" experiences, intended for those, as 1985 notes well, who are well along in the process and continue to be viable and desirable candidates. But no guarantees of appointment. And no "points" for attending one of these in terms of moving the candidate higher on the appointment list. One possible exception is that if a candidate attended and made a total fool of him/herself and the word got back to admissions officers, "IDIOT!"

Consider it a good indicator and a great opportunity to get a much more "real life" glimpse for candidates and information gathering for parents or other tagalong adults.
