According to an officer during the CWV last week, the number of applicant for USNA class of 2015 surpass last year class 2014. He said the existing number is 19K plus and could reach 20K by the end of admission dead line.

Any body has any idea why the number increasing every year?

There could be a variety of reasons. For one, that number, I believe, includes anyone who opened a file, not the number of candidates that completed or even really got into their file. Second, as the above says, more people could want to be officers. My third reason would be that USNA might have reach the underrepresented regions and gotten more people from there interested in the Academy. I'm sure there are many more, but those are just the three I can think of.

Some people are also drawn to the academy in times of economic downturn (history proves there are more applicants in bad economies).

Military is Respected Profession - Military has been portrayed positively by the media and by both political parties for the past decade. This is a major shift in "branding" from the previous decades.

The Economy is tough - It's not lost on lots of applicants and their families that the Academy's have no tuituion costs for one of the best under graduate educations in the county. This is a big factor.

Academy outreach programs are working - If you have attended one of the Academy outreach events you have seen a very professional and appealing program for potential candidates. These programs are ventureing into cities and areas where they have never been. These programs are having an effect in volume of candidates but more importantly quality of candidates

Other factors exist but these are likely the major ones.

I agree. that was definitely a factor when choosing a college. Right now my parents just can't afford to send me to a "good" college. The Academy is a great place to get an education and you get to have an amazing life serving your country afterwards...looking back at it, its really one of the best choices I had regardless of the financial situation my family was put into, but money definitely played its role.
