USNA CVW

I'm only a junior in high school and just received an invitation. Haven't opened an application to the academy, but did attend STEM as a rising sophomore and joined the USNA mailing list. Should I go ahead and attend now?

Offer

Last year my DS was offered NASS which he attended. This year he received a couple offers. One was a meet and greet in our state with his adviser for our region the other was the CVW.

Right now he has no choice but to decline the meet and greet because of he orientation to NROTC. Funny thing is he emailed his adviser before receiving the meet and greet and asked to meet him at the Academy on his way to NROTC. I guess that would be a wash.

Once he is with NROTC and started his classes he said he will talk to his professors as well as the LT in his unit to see if he can get the time to attend. He is also planning on discussing this with his adviser at the Academy next week. He told me a couple weeks ago that except for CFA & BGO int. his application was completed. I guess the BGO will not interview him until Thanksgiving. He will take the CFA after working out with the NROTC unit. He added that his MOC applications are also completed. He let them know he would be away for college so I think the interviews will be done over the phone. I'm gusing being ahead befor going off to college will be good, one less thing to work on.

He was awarded the NROTC scholarship in early January and was denied the Academy on March 24th. No clue how this will all turn out but the end goal remains the same.

During a cvw are you treated as a plebe, or are you just an outside observer type person?

The upperclassmen do not treat the drags as they would plebes; all you do is watch and observe. During the CVW the plebes that have drags are given some leeway (they don't have to do chow calls, can close their doors, use media etc.) so when you follow your plebe you get to see a more toned down version of what their life is.

they don't have to do chow calls, can close their doors, use media etc.

That's a little too lax.

Maybe media in the sense that the drag can play music and the plebe can conveniently be in the vicinity.

Plebes are generally allowed to walk in Bancroft with a drag, in order to facilitate actual conversation and answer the drag's questions. That's all.

Drags are invited to morning workouts and (what used to be and is now not) Saturday Morning Training. Participation is not mandatory, but workouts and training are usually productive and not intended to be beatdown sessions. One super motivated drag even took a Professional Knowledge quiz once.

Also, please don't wear a JROTC uniform.

Haha I remember at my CVW in October I was there for the ProKnow quiz. My plebe was asked "Define sea power?". To which he answered "Uh sir, the amount of ships on the sea...?" Then the 2/C quizzing him asked me and I just said "Sir I don't know". Man if I had known the answer that would have been so funny, but really humiliating for my plebe. :shake:

My DS, (rising senior) just received an CVW invite, so they are still sending them out. We never requested one as he had toured USNA on his own while attending a soccer camp in Virginia (VMI) in June. He just completed his BGO interview in July, but is still waiting on his English teacher, and counselor to submit their e-docs. and official transcripts. He is still working on the nomination with MOC.

Is it worth going back for a CVW if he has been on a regular tour the academy? We are on the west coast (airfare keeps going up), and given that he has already been to the academy, I'm not sure if he will get that much more out of the CVW. USNA is his absolutely first choice at this point as his goal is to become a marine officer.

Opinions? Are we as parents, being pennywise and pound foolish? Or should we go into debt and buy the ticket?

gokings814, I live on the West Coast and I went to a CVW earlier this year and had a great time. Visiting the Academy is one thing but with the CVW the "drag" actually stays in Bancroft Hall with his Plebe, eats meals in King Hall and attends a class or two with their assigned Plebe. I had a blast with mine as I went to his Chemistry class and answered a question that was stumping his group. So if you are able to financially afford it, your son might want to go--I am sure he will have fun...besides the food at the Academy is awesome! hope this helps.

Thank you, Norseman!

That is great feedback. I will try to muster up the airfare. Are you in California? If so, North or South? We are in the Central Valley near Modesto/Tracy.

I'm from Northern California as well and I will be going to the October CVW :)

I'm a junior this year and just confirmed my spot to the October CVW. I am very excited to attend. USNA is my dream school and this should be a great way to get an inside look at it.

My DS let me know last night that he is approved for Sept.4th. This is good because he will have only been in his college classes for just over a week. If cal & chem is the same as I recall from college the front end is a refresher so the catch-up is not as bad. That said he will still need the final okay from his NROTC LT's and professors.

A wild schedule for him... Check in with NROTC on 8/13, start classes on 8/21, CVW on 9/4, back to college 9/6. Decompress on 9/7 and ramp it back up on 9/8 @ 05:45 for NROTC PT. That will keep him busy! :thumb:

repeat cvw offer

I'm still not clear on this. If someone already did a CVW last fall, why would USNA offer another CVW this spring? Is this intentional, or merely a function of being an active applicant/candidate ? Already deciding that this is the place to be, would it be helpful to take a second weekend in Annapolis?

If I'm a college student, is there any chance of me getting a chance to do a CVW over winter break or something like that? My break is from Mid-December to Mid-January

I am not sure how the system works. My DS did not request the CVW it was offered by admissions. He was first offered (and attended) NASS coming out of his Jr. year.

That said this is his 2nd application, he finished HS this past June and he is now currently on the NROTC scholarship.

No CVWs in December; only one in January is the weekend of the 29th.

My son was offered CVW's in the Spring and Winter. I don't think one is any better than the other, it's just a matter of your availability.

My son eventually was able to do one in mid-January, 2014 after he received an appointment. He was told it was probably a good time to visit as they referred to the post-Xmas break time as the "dark ages", meaning he was experiencing the Academy at its bleakest.

So our DS's application was complete 1.5 weeks ago. West Coast.
How were you notified-letter or email from USNA admissions?

Thanks
