Just saw this posted on the admissions portal:

"The United States Naval Academy has extended the deadline for accepting standardized test scores to be considered as part of a candidate application package. We will now accept any SAT or ACT scores that were taken prior to 31 January 2014. If you have any questions please contact your admissions counselor."

So, that now includes the ACT on Dec. 14th, and the SAT on Jan. 25th. Those of you hoping to squeeze out a few more points, here's your chance!

I wonder what the reasoning could be. My assumption was there are a lot of candidates this year with very similar scores and they need a few more tests to separate some candidates from the rest; who is willing to go the extra mile?

Or, maybe the USNA's reasoning is far more simple than I am making it out to be! Regardless, I plan on retaking them!

My son was already taking the Dec. ACT because others would still accept it, but I'm glad to see USNA taking it now as well. He's increased his scores each time so here's hoping he can do it again next month!

    Registration deadline

Just noticed that the deadline to register for the Dec. ACT is this Friday, the 22nd so if that test is on you radar, best get signed up soon. It's already counted as a late registration so the extra fee in in place.

Bburns, Navymom - my son is glad for the extra chance too! This will be his sixth ACT - last month he brought his English/Writing up to a 31, but he still wants to get a couple more Math points if possible.

I'm in a similar boat! I have taken the SAT 4 times and the ACT once. I found I performed better on the ACT so I am very excited to retake it, as I am now going to be more familiar with the test. Every point counts! If I take the tests these 3 more times and I only receive a marginal increase in points it will still be worth it.

My son needs some more english points and a few more math would be great as well. Wish USNA superscored the reading and science. He is strong on those subjects.

Does the deadline extension affect timing of appointments?

Will the USNA extension of the testing deadline affect the timeline for seeing appointments for those without a principal nom/loa? It takes a few weeks for the scores to be available - and if you're in a MOC pool, wouldn't USNA wait for scores for all 10 in the pool to be received? Last SAT date is Jan. 25th

This is just my opinion for what it's worth.
I think you are probably correct regarding candidates who have neither a principal nomination or LOA; and who are on the bubble scholastically (including ACT/SAT test scores). However, my suspicion is that the Admissions Board has already made a fair number of tentative appointment decisions regarding really solid competitive/non-LOA candidates; and are just waiting to see first semester grades before they issue appointments. I doubt that there will be any delay for these candidates. The balance of the competitive/non-LOA candidates will either be rejected or go into the national pool once all ACT/SAT testing is available. Just my two cents worth.

I agree with you completely. DS has been contacted by admissions twice since mid December. First time was email asking for his 1st semester transcript as soon as it's available and 2nd was this week, the day after getting a call from his BGO telling him admissions needed an updated math teacher recommendation (1st one was not detailed enough as his teacher only had him in her class for 3 weeks - his other teacher quit). Admissions sent him an email with the request and Friday followed up with a phone call. Now whether this means he's on the bubble, only time will tell. Lots of praying going on in our house!

Again, just an opinion; but I'm guessing that the candidates being contacted now for information are the ones in line for possibly earlier appointments based on their competitive nominations as opposed to the candidates being deferred to the national pool or rejected - based of course on updated grades and updated recommendations if needed.

What does it mean to be "deferred" on an application status?

Where are you seeing a status? Maybe I'm not looking in the right place, but all that I see is items submitted, and the dates received/processed. And dodmerb and nomination info.

We haven't seen a status. Just doing some back reading from this time last year and saw someone mention that they were "deferred to the national pool" and was curious what that meant.

    Phew.

The national pool, I believe, is where one competes for available nominations after finding out you didn't get your MOCs nom. These "extra" noms are not attached to any one MOC/Pres/VP. Again, that's my understanding.

The national pool is for all those that have Moc noms, or other noms but didn't get an appointment charged to their MOC vacancies. They compete nationally for the remaining appointment slots rather than within their districts/states. If you do the math, the appointment vacancies for MOCs//VP/Presidential/ROTC/additional categories do not add up to the number of appointments given out per class. The rest of the appointments come from the national pool of qualified candidates with a Nom.

So if you were eligible for the Presidential Nom but status was deferred, does that mean you were not selected under the Pres. Nom? If you are found to be triple Q'd and have two or more Nom. sources but status has been 'deferred'...is that usually a bad sign? Regarding 'deference', to be clear, this is not posted anywhere on DS portal, just a hypothetical inquiry based on past readings.

USNA will sometimes defer a record reviewed early in the process. This typically occurs when the Admissions Board wants to see more applications and/or (more likely) additional info from the candidate. This often takes the form of first semester grades and/or new standardized test scores.

Just a reminder, this is a thread started last year so the extension of test scores is dated information. No mention of that this year, to my knowledge.

    2014/15 Extended Testing Deadline????

Does any one know if the testing deadline was extended for this year as well? I also just realized this thread started in November of last year.
