Does anyone know if LOAs are still going out through December 2016? Or, have they all likely been sent already? I got my application in in early October and was wondering if LOAs go out all at once in early fall or if they continue to go out up until regular notifications in Feb and Mar.

I know they were still going out as of yesterday. Cannot attest to how long they will actually be going out.

Sure hope so. DD has been CPR since end of October. Just went Q on med today. Hoping to hear any day now. Coach said 3-5 weeks from CPR to notification.

LOAs can be offered at any point in the admissions cycle. The goal is an appointment not an LOA. Every candidate should be prepared to wait until April 15th. Most will know Feb-March.

My understanding is that an LOA plus a nom , any nom (DD has a presidential) pretty much seals the deal. Am I wrong?

As long as you meet the conditions of the LOA. A candidate must be 3Q + nom to receive an appointment. If someone is waiting on a medical waiver that takes time (sometimes months).

Sounds like your daughter is a recruited athlete? If that is the case her timeline could be totally different depending on the level of recruit she is. Most candidates (non-recruited athletes) will remain CPR from the time their app is complete until Feb-March which is when the bulk of the appointments are offered. This could be 6 months for some candidates.

Yes. She doesn't have an LOA yet, and we're led to believe by the coaches that admissions had to sign off first. They weren't concerned about an appointment. Again, she has a presidential even though she has applied to all sources. I hope our faith is well-founded.

There are lots and lots of nuances when it comes to recruited athletes. The two biggest items are being 3Q and how bad the coaches want you.

I guess that's the $400,000 question! They flew her down for a visit and text or email every week or so. Is she a blue chip? I guess she gets about the same amount of attention from Navy as she does from other coaches who are recruiting her. For now, she only has eyes for the USNA.

Back to the original question posted by the OP since we seem to be discussing a different subject. The vast majority who get an appointment did NOT get an LOA. Simply completing your application won't automatically result in an LOA. USNA doesn't post stats on how many LOA's go out or when they are given. Generally, LOA's are used to encourage desirable candidates to continue to pursue USNA since the application process for SA's take longer (i.e. BGO interviews, NOM's, DODMERB....etc.) and not lose them to civilian colleges. There wouldn't be much incentive near the end of the application cycle to continue giving out LOA's.

DS received an LOA about 2 weeks ago. NavyHoops: what does 3Q mean? couldnt find on the acronym list.

Search on "triple qualified." That will bring up explanatory threads across all SAs.

Generally it means:
- medically qualified (through the DODMERB and any waiver hoops)
- athletically qualified (acceptable CFA, and possibly any other predictor of ability to successfully handle SA athletic, fitness and sport requirements)
- scholastically qualified (academic, test scores, ECs, class rank, awards, anything else an SA wants to evaluate and compare)

That's my understanding of it. I am sure others will tweak it if needed to reflect any particular SA or describe better.

For clarification...the "physical" qualification ONLY involves the CFA (nothing more or less). When the CFA administrator submits scores (or are received from another SA), the BGOs can immediately see whether a candidate is physically qualified (or not). Any other athletic participation (varsity sports or outside of school) is considered within the scholastic/Admissions Board qualification.

Thanks. I understand. I'm medically and physically qualified and I have a high ACT score, a high GPA taking the most demanding courses offered at my school, I play two varsity sports and am a leader in Model UN along with several other STEM-oriented school and community clubs and organizations. However, I am not a recruited athlete. I am applying to a few academies, but Navy is my first choice of all the academies and also ahead of any civilian schools for me. So, I was just hoping I still have a chance of receiving a LOA?

The chances are slim. The ultimate goal is a Letter of Appointment. Not a Letter of Assurance.

@colorado1098, in addition to what time2 said above, admissions could still give LOAs this point forward if a highly desirable candidate has pending noms, DoDMERB/waiver needed, etc, just as NavyHoops said.

@Majordadnavy2021, has DD secured any other nom at this time? From experience (twice), admissions can/will wait to see if candidates can secure other noms from MoC when they already have a Prez nom in order to be more flexible to decide who to charge it to. The exceptions I have seen are primarily qualified candidates with Prez nom, completed application early, and live in NoVa. Good luck to your DD!

Hasn't heard from senators yet but interviews with Rep. on Friday. She's been told that admissions is behind and not to be concerned. So she's 2Q until de gets the read from admissions. Fingers remain crossed.

Only 2Q? If DD has all application items completed, CFA completed, and DoDMERB completed as well, did you mean to say 3Q?

Also, was "admissions is behind" shared by BGO or admissions themselves?

What I meant was that admissions hadn't said yay or nay. Everything else is Q. Coaches have told her that admissions is behind and not to be concerned . Her application was CPR on 10/21.
