Is there any competitiveness to selecting majors at USNA? Specifically tier 1 and 2 majors, or does everyone essentially get their first choice?

You will get whatever you pick. I have never seen someone not get their pick. I know there are certain percentages they want to achieve with STEM majors so as group 1 or 2 you will be fine.

A majority of mids will pick Group 1 or 2 anyway, the STEM quota never comes into play.

Aero was extremely competitive for '16. I remember hearing that they did screen plebes for that one. Good grades in Calculus and Chemistry were key.

Cyber Ops as well, but mostly because it was a new major with very little faculty support at that time. They could only have forty mids in the major.

Some mids will be encouraged to switch majors or placed on probation for Group 1 in general if they received poor grades in Calculus and Chemistry plebe year.

Like nuensis said it changes from year to year, cyber ops had the opposite problem this year.

I've never heard of anyone ever who didn't get a major they wanted, except for Cyber Ops, because my class was the 1st class for it.

No need to worry.

if you're struggling in math and science as a plebe (aka D's and low C's) and you put down a group 1 major, you're plebe academic advisor will probably not recommend you go group 1. heard of a few folks who wanted to do aero/systems/mechanical engineering but ac advisor said no because they weren't strong in calc or chem first semester plebe year.
