I received a TWE today. It did not contain a rejection letter, though. I was informed that I was put on the Wait List for the Class of 2018. I know this is anot a good thing. Can someone explain how many–if at all–the academy takes off of the Wait List?

From one of the stickies above:

What's the deal with the waitlist?

A formal "waitlist" has been used by USNA for the past several years. Like most schools, USNA puts out a certain number of offers of appointment to form a class of the desired size. If more candidates than expected decline, USNA will go to the waitlist and make additional offers until the desired class size is reached. The waitlist can be up to 130 candidates; however, USNA has never taken that many. The waitlist is NOT ranked so, no, you won't know where on the waitlist you stand and neither does your BGO.

How many waitlisted candidates will be offered appointments?

That depends entirely on how many candidates with offers of appointments turn them down. As the acceptances and rejections come in, USNA will have a sense of whether or not any waitlisted candidates will be offered appointments and will start sending turndown letters to the less competitive candidates on the waitlist. Last year there was a high rate of acceptances so very few candidates came off the waitlist. In other years, as many as 50 have been offered appontments.

cbaker, your wait list letter is not really a bad thing at this point in the game. No, it's not as good as a BFE, but you are still in the game, and you still have a chance. There is no way to know how many wait listed candidates will be called off the list and offered an appointment. My DS who is now a MIDN 2/C was waitlisted and did not get an offer of appointment until the middle of May. The numbers who get called changes each year and is based on the need of the Academy to fill vacancies created by those who reject their offered appointments. While waiting, embrace Plan B and good luck!

I don't remember last year's story of someone getting a late BFE, but it happened a couple years ago, also, when my DS was finally receiving his appointment. DS had attended Greystone as a self prep and the Greystone appointee group was meeting for a "Last Supper" at a BBQ place before reporting for I Day the following morning. One of the Greystoners was a recipient of a very last minute offer, just a few days before I Day. So it does happen once in a while. Not something we can count on but there's always a possibility.

DS got a USNA waitlist letter today. He has an appointment offer from USAFA and will accept if no Annapolis offer - but USNA is his first choice. I just hope we are not still waiting to hear from the Navy in June as he reports to Colorado Springs on June 26th.

    Still on the island

Could a candidate still receive a TWE or be waitlisted if he or she was a primary/principle nominee and 3Q?

No. By law if a candidate is 3Q and principal he/she must be appointed.

If the person was a principal nominee and fully qualified, he/she must be offered an appointment (absent serious criminal/character issues). Thus, he/she would not receive a TWE or WL.

Thanks for the quick answers. Yup the 808 takes weeks longer but its okay DS has plan A2 USAFA appointment just waiting on USNA. We would like to know asap so we can make travel arrangements. I think that will be harder then DS getting into a service academy.

Tru dat brudda! Getting off the rock can be super tricky. I suggest book the cheapest to LAX on HA or Allegiant so you have it then buy a separate ticket to CO or MD. The few days difference can be your LA visit. Plus a few days to change the 3 hours and then travel on can help. We do this every 90ish days so I understand.

I have a friend whom her son is the Class of 2017. There was a candidate that was offered an appointment 1 or 2 days before I Day because another candidate passed away in a horrific car accident. I want to say the whole family passed away. So sad.

So sad that I hesitate to post my question…

I asked this on the "still in the game" thread, but realized it's better placed here: does it make any sense at all for someone on the Wait List to start an application for Class of 2019 now?

    3Q on Waitlist?

If a candidate is waitlisted, does that mean he/she is 3Qd?
