UW vs UCLA army rotc decision

Thank you everyone for all your advice and help! I believe I have made my decision, and I will be selecting UW for my scholarship!

Good call....now lets hope Chris Petersen can get that football program turned around!! Remember, that weather is what's responsible for all those trees and lakes and rivers and snow in the winter so that you can ski or snowboard!! Most people in LA would kill for the outdoors that will be right at your doorstep.

Ha ha true. I do love the NW outdoors , lots of biking and running places

DO NOT TAKE THE SCHOLARSHIP TO UCLA. The classes are extremely competitive and the program lacks complete empathy for all of its students. They do not care about your academics whatsoever and will do everything to get in the way of them, prioritizing training first.

Your reference is to academic or ROTC class competitiveness? I'm guessing academic. Did you pick a premed curriculum or a science as your major by chance?

If you took chem, calc, and physics your freshman year you are in all the weed out courses that make academics very difficult.

Sounds like your saying that the ROTC Battalion does not put Academics first as a cadet and that training priority is put above college academics.

Could you expand on that a bit, it's always good to get an inside view of different programs from different perspectives.

Good questions Jcleppe. Is this PMS specific? Is this something the battalion has a reputation of? Examples. Its a pretty strong stances, and curious about things to back this up. Sure its competitive, its UCLA, don't think anyone would expect it to be easy.

I am not shortygirl but have recent knowledge of this AROTC program - if this is still going on it is not new. The previous two PMS' and Cadre made it difficult to not miss classes for training exercises. Some of this is the difficulty of scheduling training exercises to accommodate multiple schools academic calendars. If an academic class conflicted with an ROTC Class (even if it was the only section or only one with openings when registering) I know of no examples where they allowed individual study for ROTC which is allowed per cadet command regulations.

The issue may not be with the PMS but with the 03's and SNCO's as they are the ones that could fix this for the cadets. It is possible to be successful in this battalion and cross enrolled schools but be wary if your major is difficult (STEM) or has few sections of all classes. If you are a PolySci, History, or Psych major, no problem - though this may not be shortygirls experience.

The HRA's, SNCOs, and Company grade cadre have been pretty bad at UCLA and cross enrolled schools in the past too - Not all of them, but more than a small percent. Hey UCLA HRA - 4 year scholarship cadets should be paid for initial travel to school and back to HOR when they graduate.

Maybe it will get better with the new PMS that is finishing up her first year.
